10 minutes backstage with Darius Rucker at Stagecoach

Darius Rucker, who’s performed at Stagecoach as a country artist before, returned to the festival on Sunday night with his band, Hootie & the Blowfish. I had a chance to speak with him a few hours before they took the stage.

You’re the perfect person to talk to about how 1990s rock and country music are connecting – it was a big topic at Stagecoach this year. What are your thoughts? Well, I’ve noticed it too. I just saw The Wallflowers play, and it strikes me that today’s country music isn’t that different from the rock music of the ’90s, excluding the grunge scene. I think it’s really interesting to see this happening.

Hootie and the Blowfish bring out Public Enemy at Stagecoach

The Wallflowers’ Jakob Dylan — is this a man you know?
I met him once, I think, a long time ago.

What about Gavin Rossdale, the singer from Bush, or Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind? It’s funny because we all lived in Columbia, South Carolina around the same time. We’d sometimes see them at award shows, but we never really had the chance to get to know them well or tour together.

According to my internet research, you turn 60 in two weeks.
I know.

I’m sorry to offend you.
Why would you throw it out there like that?

Would any Hootie & the Blowfish song be a good fit for a Cialis commercial? Hmm, maybe “Let Her Cry”?

Seems insane.
I don’t know why I said that.

You’re doing Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” tonight, which is fantastic! What impact did Public Enemy have on you? For me, when they first came out in ’84, they were revolutionary. No one else was doing anything like them – their music was so powerful and direct. They were huge in my community back then. So, to be here at Stagecoach now, and actually have them performing with us – that’s going to be an incredible experience.

Did the film Stagecoach seem like the perfect fit for the song “Fight the Power”? Considering everything happening today, I believe it’s a relevant and powerful pairing.
