10 Biggest Reveals In Malcolm In The Middle: Life’s Still Unfair

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair.

After a 20-year hiatus, Malcolm in the Middle has returned with a four-episode revival on Hulu, and the biggest complaint you could have is that it’s too short! Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is a delightful surprise – a rare revival series where the cast seamlessly falls back into their characters, their chemistry remains fantastic, and the writing is consistently funny and true to the original show.

It’s very unusual for a sitcom to be successfully revived years later, and even rarer for it to really work. But Life’s Still Unfair manages to both bring back the characters fans already love and introduce a fresh, funny new generation of the family. Malcolm’s daughter, Leah, who often speaks directly to the audience, has the potential to be a fantastic lead, and Hal and Lois’ youngest child, Kelly, could be a great comedic partner.

The biggest reason people were excited about the Malcolm in the Middle reboot was seeing the original cast return. While it was great to see familiar faces, the new characters also kept viewers engaged. Life’s Still Unfair revisits these beloved characters twenty years later, revealing some unexpected turns their lives have taken. We learn that Dewey is now a traveling musician, Hal has accidentally become famous on social media, and Stevie has settled down and started a family.

Lois’ Pregnancy In The Series Finale Led To The Birth Of Kelly

The final episode of Malcolm in the Middle revealed that Lois was pregnant, meaning the Wilkersons were about to welcome another baby. Just when Hal and Lois thought they’d successfully raised their sons and Dewey was finally getting some attention, they found out they were starting the parenting journey all over again. The spin-off series, Life’s Still Unfair, introduces this new child, Kelly, played by Vaughan Murrae. Kelly seems to have a bit of each of their older brothers’ personalities – some of Francis and Reese’s troublemaking tendencies, and some of Malcolm and Dewey’s intelligence.

Malcolm Owns A Food Charity

A major question surrounding the potential Malcolm in the Middle reboot was what Malcolm achieved as an adult. Given his incredibly high intelligence, he had limitless career possibilities and a lot of drive. Ultimately, he used his talents to create a charity that provides food for those in need, focusing on making a difference in his community and beyond.

Dewey Is A Touring Musician

Despite the initial excitement and casting change for Dewey, the character had very little screen time in the Malcolm in the Middle reboot. He only appeared through Zoom calls because the actor was on tour during all four episodes. It turns out Dewey’s childhood musical talent developed into a successful career as a touring musician. Hopefully, if the show gets renewed, we’ll finally get to see him perform.

Malcolm Is A Single Dad To A Teenage Daughter Named Leah

The new version of the show features Malcolm as a single father to his teenage daughter, Leah (played by Keeley Karsten). He’s dealing with his own anxieties and emotional issues while trying to raise her alone. Leah was the result of a college fling, and her mother has since left them. This means Malcolm is solely responsible for her upbringing. Like her father, Leah is incredibly intelligent, but she also shares his tendency to overthink, make poor choices, and sometimes act as if she’s better than everyone else.

Leah Has Inherited Her Dad’s Fourth-Wall-Breaking Ability

As a movie fan, I immediately noticed Leah has her dad’s knack for talking directly to us, the audience – it’s a really fun, self-aware thing he did in the original show and continues in the reboot. When Leah and Malcolm are both addressing the camera at the same time, the energy is amazing – it’s like watching Deadpool and She-Hulk bounce off each other! It’s becoming pretty obvious they’re building Leah up for her own series, and honestly, I’m totally excited about that possibility.

Malcolm Has A Girlfriend

The show always had a funny contrast: Malcolm was a genius with science and math, but terrible at dating. He repeatedly messed up potential relationships, which was both comical and a little painful to watch. Now that he’s grown up, he’s improved a lot, and is happily in a long-term relationship with Tristan, played by Kiana Madeira. He’s not perfect, but he’s trying hard to be a good and supportive boyfriend.

Malcolm Has Minimal Contact With His Family (& Never Told Them About Leah)

I was initially disappointed in the Malcolm in the Middle reboot trailer to see Malcolm rarely interacting with his family. However, the show offered a good explanation: he still talks to them, but keeps the conversations brief. The biggest reveal is that he’s kept his wife, Leah, a secret from them for years. He told her his parents and siblings were all deceased, so she was understandably shocked to discover she has a whole family. It was especially painful to learn Lois had always wanted a daughter, and Malcolm kept his granddaughter hidden from her.

Reese Is Exploiting Hal’s Clumsiness For Social Media

Reese is now completely absorbed in do-it-yourself projects with his dad, Hal. At first, Hal appreciates the quality time with his son. However, he soon discovers Reese is exploiting his lack of skill for online profit. Reese films Hal’s mishaps and injuries during these projects, posting them on TikTok where his followers enjoy watching Hal’s clumsy failures. It’s a typical Reese scheme – a quick way to make money, updated for today’s world.

Stevie Has A Family

It’s really nice to see that Malcolm and Stevie are still close after all this time. Often, when older movies get new sequels, the characters’ relationships have fallen apart – think of Han and Leia in The Force Awakens. This new installment also reveals that Stevie is gay, which has unfortunately caused some negative reactions. He’s in a loving relationship with Glen, and they’re raising a son together. Considering Stevie’s difficult upbringing, it’s wonderful to see him as a happy and well-adjusted adult with a beautiful family.

Francis & Piama Are Expecting A Child

The drama surrounding Malcolm’s hidden family is taking attention away from some wonderful news: Francis and Piama are going to have a baby! I loved the new characters introduced in Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair – they feel ready for their own spin-off show – but I wish there was a younger character like Dewey to create playful trouble. Francis and Piama’s child could fill that role perfectly, especially if they inherit Francis’s mischievous side from when he was young – that would be a great solution.
