Marvel Studios announced in 2023 that Star-Lord would reappear in a post-credits scene for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Now, after a three-year wait, fans finally know when Chris Pratt will reprise his role as the character.
A reliable source, MyTimeToShineHello, recently posted on X that Star-Lord will be back in the upcoming movie Secret Wars, which is a direct sequel to this year’s Avengers: Doomsday. While Vol. 3 showed Star-Lord leaving his team in space to return to Earth and see his grandfather, it seems he’ll appear in Secret Wars as well.
Chris Pratt first played Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord, in the 2014 movie Guardians of the Galaxy. He continued in the role for the sequels, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). He also appeared as Star-Lord with the other Guardians in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as the Disney+ special The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (both released in 2022).
Chris Pratt Has Remained Open to Star-Lord’s MCU Return
Ever since it was announced in 2023 that Star-Lord would return, the question wasn’t if Chris Pratt would reprise the role, but when. He did mention during the release of Vol. 3 that he’d only consider returning under the right circumstances.
Chris Pratt believes it would feel odd to continue Star-Lord’s story without James Gunn, who directed the first three films so well. Pratt credits Gunn with helping him define the character of Peter Quill and acknowledges that he wouldn’t have had the role without Gunn’s creative vision, which he feels is fully realized in the films.
The actor explained that it’s crucial to respect the character’s established history from the previous three films and what fans appreciate about him, rather than just making another film for financial gain.
Star-Lord Will Be Absent from Avengers: Doomsday
Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord, probably won’t be missed in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. That’s because the film already features a huge team of heroes – the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four. Even with so many characters, Lewis Pullman, who plays Sentry, promised in March that everyone will have a significant role to play.
Pullman noted that every character, no matter how small, gets a chance to shine and become fully realized. He praised the Russo brothers for ensuring no actor was simply a background presence, and for understanding the importance of giving such talented performers meaningful roles.
The actor hinted that the upcoming film, Doomsday, will feature some surprising partnerships between characters. He said fans will be thrilled to see these unexpected team-ups, which he described as fulfilling long-held wishes and ‘what ifs’ about who could work together. “It’s so fun to dream about. What if A and B would work together? Would B and D would work together? You get to see a lot of those fantasies come into fruition,” Pullman added.
Joe and Anthony Russo are directing both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled to be released on December 17, 2027, one year after the first film.
