Since 1986, The Legend of Zelda has been one of the most popular and successful video game series ever created. Nintendo continues to release new Zelda games, and with over 30 titles – including original games, updated versions, and spin-offs – it remains a well-known and beloved franchise with a dedicated fanbase.
While The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and its sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, ushered in a new era for the Zelda series, one Nintendo Switch game still sparks debate among fans: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment.
Is This The Zelda Game Switch 2 Gamers Wanted?
Coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is the newest action-packed game in The Legend of Zelda series, created by Koei Tecmo. It blends the Zelda universe and characters with the fast-paced combat of the Dynasty Warriors games. The story takes place during the Imprisoning War, which is also featured in Tears of the Kingdom.
While Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment received mostly positive reviews and respectable scores—a 79 on Metacritic and an 8.5 User Score—it didn’t fully satisfy many Legend of Zelda fans. This has led to ongoing discussions and debates about the game, particularly on Reddit, as players grapple with initial excitement and eventual disappointment.
A player on the r/HyruleWarriors subreddit described Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment as both “incredible” and “disappointing.” They enjoyed the game, especially if you liked Age of Calamity, but had some issues. The player felt let down by the limited number of characters, the slow and repetitive gameplay, and a setting they found uninteresting and lacking in originality.
When Is The Next Mainline Zelda Set For Release?
As of today, Nintendo hasn’t officially announced the next major Legend of Zelda game. But, based on how long previous games took to develop, we’re likely looking at a release around 2028 or 2029. With the Zelda series celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, there’s also a good chance Nintendo has a big reveal up its sleeve, doesn’t there?
The big question is what kind of game it will be. Will it tell a completely new story, or continue the adventures in the worlds of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom? That’s still unknown. However, because some fans weren’t thrilled with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, Nintendo has a chance to really impress players this time.
