Zach Cregger’s upcoming movie, Resident Evil, based on the popular video game series, is scheduled for release in theaters later this year. Recent reports suggest the film will tell a completely new story, separate from previous games and movies, and won’t feature familiar characters like Leon S. Kennedy, confirming earlier statements from Cregger.

What Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie is about revealed by rumor

According to a recent report, Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil movie won’t be a direct adaptation of any specific game, but will feature familiar locations and the main organization from the series.

A popular online source, MyTimetoShineHello, recently revealed potential plot details for a new film on X (formerly Twitter). According to the post, the story centers around a man tasked with delivering a mysterious bag he believes contains human organs. His journey takes a wild turn when he gets stranded in the ice, accidentally hits a zombie, is stopped by the police, chased by a dog, and then pursued by zombies that are actually aliens.

The story follows him as he encounters Paul Walter Hauser, an employee of the Umbrella Corporation, and their mission to reach Raccoon City and deliver a cure to the 28th floor of the company’s main building.

The new Resident Evil movie comes out in theaters on September 18, 2026. This will be the eighth film in the series and the second attempt to restart the franchise after 2021’s Welcome to Raccoon City.

Zach Cregger, the director behind films like Barbarian and Weapons, says his next horror movie will be very different from his previous work. He described it as a fast-paced, action-packed film where he can be creatively free. He wants to approach it with the same energy and camera work as the movie Evil Dead 2 – letting loose and having fun.

I really loved how the director described the film – he called it a genuine ‘love letter’ to the source material. What struck me even more was hearing that this was a story he was passionate about telling, regardless of whether he even had the rights to adapt it. It felt like a project born out of pure creative enthusiasm, and that really comes through on screen.

Cregger directed the film and also collaborated with Shay Hatten on the screenplay. Austin Abrams and Paul Walter Hauser lead the cast, with supporting roles played by Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Johnno Wilson.
