It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a regulatory body in possession of a sound reputation, must be in want of a more effective task force. Thus, the Securities and Exchange Commission, ever eager to expand its sphere of influence, has established a new cross-border task force, intended to put a stop to transnational frauds, including those vulgar affairs commonly referred to as “pump-and-dump schemes”. One can only imagine the vexation felt at their morning tea!
Summary
- The SEC has at last decided to battle transnational fraud and market manipulation, because apparently one cannot rely solely on stern letters and raised eyebrows.
- Rather delightfully, the task force’s ambitions extend beyond mere companies-they have set their sights on intermediaries and gatekeepers, as if in search of Regency era fortune hunters.
With exemplary resolution, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission has declared, in a press release most officious, that it shall now pursue the wiliest of foreign-based companies engaged in dubious undertakings. The newly convened Cross-Border Task Force (which, I suppose, must sound quite dashing in the corridors of Wall Street) will train its sights on potential violations of U.S. federal securities laws by those offshore entities who conduct themselves with all the subtlety of Mr. Wickham at a card table.
The SEC, never one to be outdone by the idle guidance of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, has reminded investors-crypto enthusiasts and the like-that pump-and-dump schemes are no place for those possessed of sound judgment or any desire for a peaceful night’s rest.
Pump-and-dump schemes in crypto
Much as a fortune-hunting cousin might slyly manipulate the drawing room gossip, so do pump-and-dump scams flourish in the seedier corners of the crypto landscape. Here, thinly-traded altcoins and meme tokens are subjected to the artful contrivances of insiders and knaves, who inflate prices with the enthusiasm of Lydia Bennet shrieking about ribbons, only to depart later, leaving retail investors as befuddled as Mrs. Bennet at a county ball.
The retail user, that oft-ignored majority, becomes the greatest victim of these melodramatic rises and inevitable collapses-surely an injustice worthy of Lady Catherine’s most imperious glare.
While investors are best advised to practice due diligence (or, failing that, to rely on Cousin Collins for advice, which is not recommended), the SEC’s task force professes its intention to strengthen the Division of Enforcement’s efforts, pursuing entities and individuals whose fraudulent airs harm U.S. investors more than a rain-soaked trip to Pemberley.
Not content with mere schemes, the task force shall also address the gatekeepers-auditors and underwriters-who, it seems, have made the U.S. capital markets accessible to more rogues than any respectable assembly room could bear.
“We welcome companies from around the world seeking access to the U.S. capital markets,” declared SEC chair Paul Atkins, with a fortitude to rival Lady Catherine herself. “But we shall not tolerate bad actors-whether companies, intermediaries, gatekeepers or exploitative traders-who imagine the Atlantic to be a convenient hiding place. This new task force shall rally every investigative force at our disposal to strike at transnational fraud, leaving not a country dance untouched.”
Apparently, staff throughout the agency will collaborate (though one hopes their efforts do not descend into familial squabbles), and the Commission will consider any ingenious recommendations for further civilising U.S. investor protections. Fresh rules and updated disclosures may arise, though one suspects they will not be nearly as entertaining as a proposal from Mr. Darcy. 💸📉
