The Monster Hunter series stands out as one of today’s most thrilling and widely-loved video games, despite not boasting the strongest narrative. Instead, it delivers an exhilarating experience by allowing players to wield massive weapons to hunt down colossal beasts and dragons that surpass any human’s physical capabilities in size. Consequently, the Monster Hunter universe is teeming with enormous monsters. Now, I wonder, what’s the largest monster found in the Monster Hunter franchise?

As a dedicated Monster Hunter gamer, I’ve come to realize that the size of these beasts isn’t solely determined by their length. Despite common assumptions, these colossal creatures are also defined and measured by their mass. In our current conversation, we’re focusing on the heftiest monsters in the Monster Hunter universe. Let’s delve into the largest ones that have graced this game!

15. Najarala

Among the list, Najarala stands out uniquely as it’s one of only two non-Elder Dragons present. Despite not being the strongest, this snake-wyvern is notably the largest non-Elder Dragon creature within the Monster Hunter universe in terms of size. Its immense and elongated form gives it an intimidating presence within the franchise, particularly for those who harbor a fear of snakes.

The Najarala wyvern, being 141.58 feet long, outstretches any other wyvern in the game because it’s a serpent-like creature. It navigates and assaults much like a snake, thus preferring to wind itself around as it slithers across the map. Consequently, unlike the other creatures in the game, it doesn’t traverse or soar through the air, instead opting for more sinuous movements.

14. Fatalis

Among all dragons in the Monster Hunter series, Fatalis stands out as one of the most dreaded, for it’s considered a catastrophe with potential to bring unprecedented devastation. In truth, its strength is so immense that it established the “black dragon” category, which was later used to define monsters occupying the highest echelons of power.

Compared to other monsters in the game, Fatalis is quite sizable, though it may not be considered overly huge. Adhering to the European dragon aesthetic, this beast measures approximately 145.73 feet from its head to snout. Moreover, it boasts enormous wings that enable flight and generate winds similar to a hurricane upon flapping them. Overcoming Fatalis in Monster Hunter instantly elevates a player’s standing as a skilled hunter.

13. Safi’jiiva

In essence, Safi’jiiva serves as the ultimate foe in Monster Hunter: World Iceborne, representing the grown-up form of Xeno’jiiva, who held that position in the primary storyline of Monster Hunter: World. Consequently, this creature exhibits far greater strength than its younger counterpart and towers above even the already imposing newborn Xeno’jiiva, as was initially shown in Monster Hunter: World.

Despite appearing not overly massive, this Elder Dragon measures roughly 157.5 feet in length and embodies a traditional European dragon form, emphasizing its elongated snout-to-tail structure rather than overall bulk. However, equipped with substantial wings for flight, it presents an impressively colossal appearance.

12. Yama Tsukami

Despite being labeled an Elder Dragon, Yama Tsukami’s true nature remains a mystery due to its peculiar appearance. It resembles a strange entity, composed mainly of moss and adorned with tentacles and eyes. Interestingly, it wields Great Thunderbugs that dwell within it as weapons against adversaries. What makes Yama Tsukami even more intriguing is its ability to fly without discernible wings.

Despite not being traditionally long, Yama Tsukami is remarkably expansive in size, with an approximate length of 135.7 feet. Its massive form rather than its length makes it one of the largest creatures featured in the Monster Hunter series, although its true nature remains a mystery.

11. Shen Gaoren

In the realm of Monster Hunter, Shen Gaoren stands out as the most colossal Carapaceon creature across the entire franchise. This titan isn’t just a humongous crab; it boasts extraordinarily long limbs. Its immense size is largely attributed to the fact that it dons the skull of a grown Lao Shan-Lung as its protective shell.

In the game, even though the Lao-Shan Lung you meet initially is just a young one, legends suggest it can grow to immense sizes. Notably, Shen Gaoren, the crab-like creature, utilizes the skull of this monster as its shell, hinting at its colossal size. With Shen Gaoren standing at approximately 111 feet when upright, it’s not just its towering height but also its massive body that can carry a giant skull around that earns it a place among the largest monsters in the entire game.

10. Gogmazios

Among all dragons in this game, one of the fiercest is Gogmazios, a monster you must vanquish within the walls of a sprawling castle. To defeat it, utilize the weapons at your disposal scattered throughout the area. This colossal dragon appears to be coated in some sort of tar, which it employs as part of its aggressive tactics during battle.

In Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, Gogmazios may not be the most colossal creature, but its immense length and similarly elongated limbs give it a dominating presence among the smaller monsters within the game. This towering beast stretches approximately 161.43 feet from head to tail, making it significantly larger than some of the Elder Dragons you’ll encounter in Monster Hunter.

9. Ceadeus

Ceadeus stands out among monsters in the game for utilizing the underwater combat system introduced in Monster Hunter 3, a feature not seen again in any subsequent games. This Elder Dragon excels in using this game’s unique underwater battle mechanics, making the encounter somewhat challenging as you must navigate through multiple stages to finish it off.

Standing approximately 193 feet tall, Ceadeus is an extraordinarily long and voluminous beast that may not appear particularly massive due to its emphasis on length over bulkiness. However, this Elder Dragon is a formidable adversary, skillfully leveraging its size during the underwater skirmishes you encounter it in, demonstrating immense power.

8. Gaismagorm

In the Monster Hunter series, a new formidable creature has emerged – Gaismagorm, nicknamed the Archdemon of the Abyss. This colossal beast serves as the final boss in the storyline for Monster Hunter: Rise Sunbreak. Though it boasts an intimidating appearance, its combat may not be as fearsome as other monsters, making it comparatively less challenging to face during battle.

Despite being enormous, Gaismagorm’s size is actually one of its greatest advantages. It’s approximately as long as Gogmazios, but it’s significantly heavier due to being a colossal Elder Dragon that subsists on life energy. Evidently, the ability to carve its body six times and its tail twice demonstrates just how massive this beast truly is.

7. Dire Miralis

Making its first appearance in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Dire Miralis is an extraordinarily massive creature resembling a volcano, yet it possesses semi-aquatic abilities, allowing it to traverse water. Despite being frequently covered in lava, this beast primarily relies on fire and magma as its primary weapons.

Even though Dire Miralis towers at over 206 feet and appears to be a dragon coated in molten lava, there’s something about it that lacks the usual awe-inspiring presence one might expect. It feels more like battling a smaller Lao-Shan Lung drenched in lava, if you will. Interestingly, many players have relished this Elder Dragon encounter without the slightest hint of fear, despite it being labeled as a Dangerous First-Class Monster – the new term for “Black Dragons.

6. Lao-Shan Lung

In Monster Hunter, the first colossal beast you might face is the imposing Lao-Shan Lung. This game series is brimming with massive monsters, but even giants like Diablos and Rathalos pale in comparison to this towering elder dragon. The name “Lao-Shan Lung” translates to “old mountain dragon,” a fitting title for a creature that’s as large as a mountain itself.

In Monster Hunter, the first truly enormous monster you might face is Lao-Shan Lung, an elder dragon so big it lives up to its name, which means “old mountain dragon.” Even the biggest monsters like Diablos and Rathalos are smaller than this towering beast.

In Monster Hunter Freedom 2, the Lao-Shan Lung you battle measures 228.34 feet, indicating it’s still young. This implies that in adulthood, this dragon could grow even larger. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see its adult form in the game. Some theories suggest that Zorah Magdaros might be an adult Lao-Shan Lung or a different grown version of it.

5. Jhen Mohran

Jhen Mohran can be thought of as a slightly smaller relative to the Dah’ren Mohran, both being monstrous entities, yet possessing distinct features. Unlike the Dah’ren Mohran with its solitary horn and jagged structure, Jhen Mohran sports tusks and exhibits a more serpentine form.

Approximately 366 feet long, Jhen Mohran appears to be a fusion of a whale and a serpent, given its elongated form. This makes it a colossal beast that one should exercise caution with if unfamiliar with managing such immense size. Similarly to Dah’ren Mohran, it stands out as the largest monster in the game when initially introduced, overshadowing all other monsters during their debut.

4. Dah’ren Mohran

Dah’ren Mohran, unlike other monsters listed here, is an Elder Dragon dwarf in size, making Lao-Shan Lung appear as small as a squirrel. This is because it was designed to emulate a colossal whale-like creature that traverses sand rather than water. Given its whale-inspired form, it’s only fitting that Dah’ren Mohran should be enormous.

Standing towering at an astonishing 375.5 feet, I can’t help but marvel at the colossal Dah’ren Mohran. It’s not just its imposing horn that takes the cake; its sheer bodily mass is something to behold as well. To put it into perspective, this Elder Dragon’s body dwarfs Lao-Shan Lung, whose snout-to-tail length falls short by a staggering 150 feet! Yet, despite its size, my encounters with this titan have been surprisingly anticlimactic.

3. Dalamadur

In the primary Monster Hunter series, Dalamadur surpassed the Mohran relatives to claim the title of largest monster. Notably, this beast outgrows all other creatures in the game, earning the distinction as the longest monster in the entire mainline Monster Hunter title, boasting a length of 1448.87 feet. This puts it almost four times longer than Dah’ren Morhan, a previously gigantic monster.

In a simplified and conversational manner: Dalamadur is incredibly massive, so big that it could encircle an entire mountain with its body. Fighting this colossal serpentine monster isn’t easy; you even have to scale its enormous form to inflict significant damage on certain areas since reaching its head feels like a challenging task. To truly appreciate Dalamadur’s immense size, imagine a snake Elder Dragon that could swallow entire ships without breaking a sweat.

2. Zorah Magdaros

In the Monster Hunter: World game and across the mainline Monster Hunter series, Zorah Magdaros stands out as the biggest monster, even surpassing in size the Lao-Shan Lung. This colossal beast is approximately 845.29 feet long, which is nearly four times the length of Lao-Shan Lung. Imagine a volcano-shaped Lao-Shan Lung with a turtle-like figure – that’s Zorah Magdaros for you!

You might wonder why Zorah Magdaros appears larger than Dalamadur, given that Dalamadur is almost twice as long. This is due to the fact that Zorah Magdaros is extraordinarily large not just because of its length, but also its massive size and muscular build. In contrast, Dalamadur, resembling a snake, seems less imposing in terms of mass despite its length. Consequently, Zorah Magdaros holds the title of the largest mainline monster in Monster Hunter.

1. Laviente

Although Laviente doesn’t belong to the primary Monster Hunter series, it holds the record as the biggest monster in the entire franchise. It was introduced in Monster Hunter Frontier, which is an MMORPG that isn’t typically linked with the mainline games. However, since Laviente is part of the franchise, we felt compelled to include it on this list.

Laviente is not just long, but also incredibly thick. It doesn’t share Dalamadur’s snake-like appearance, as it possesses a monstrously large body similar to Zorah Magdaros and a length of 1476.37 meters, surpassing the snakes from the mainline games. Therefore, it has both size and mass working in its favor, which explains why eight hunters are needed to take down this colossal creature in Monster Hunter Frontier.
