Can you believe it’s been 25 years since The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring came out? Of course, that means tons of new stuff is being released to celebrate, and I’m especially excited about the new LEGO Minas Tirith set!
The Royal Mint has launched the first of a new series of limited-edition coins celebrating the popular 2001 movie. Although smaller in size, these coins are still highly collectible.

The new 50p coin, designed with the movie in mind, was created in Wales – a country with scenery just as beautiful and striking as New Zealand.
As a huge Tolkien fan, I was so excited to see the design of this coin! One side has the King’s portrait, which is cool, but the real magic is on the other side. It features the One Ring, and around it is the famous inscription in Elvish and Black Speech: ‘One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to bind them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them’ – it gives me chills every time I read it!

This is the first of seven collectible coins being released, with the remaining coins planned over the next two years to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the films The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
Unlike other coins from The Royal Mint, the editions celebrating The Lord of the Rings have a special secret. When light catches the coin, a hidden image of the Eye of Sauron appears from the center of the ring.

So, as a collector, we’ve got a few options for these coins. There’s the standard Brilliant Uncirculated one for £15, a colored version for £25, and then a really fancy Silver Proof colored coin that’ll set you back £92.50. It really depends on how much detail you want, I guess!
As a collector, I’m really excited about these new coins! The colour version is limited to only 20,000, which makes it pretty special, but the Silver Proof is even rarer – there are just 7,000 of those being made. Definitely going to try and get one of each!
You can purchase these coins individually, or sign up for a subscription to receive the complete set as each coin becomes available in 2027 and 2028. Subscribers will also get a free card case to store all seven coins.
This isn’t the first film to get a special coin collection. Winnie the Pooh and Dennis the Menace also have commemorative coins released to celebrate milestones in their history.
You can order the full range exclusively from The Royal Mint website now.
