Would Star Trek: Enterprise been more successful had it been set on Earth?

As a gamer who has spent countless hours exploring galaxies far, far away, I can’t help but ponder the ‘what ifs’ when it comes to Star Trek: Enterprise. Having lived through the golden age of Trek from 1987-2001, I understand why the original concept of Earth-bound building and Vulcan first contact might have felt like a departure for many fans at that time.

Among all Star Trek shows, only Star Trek: Enterprise was terminated after four seasons, and it’s unfortunate because this was around the time when the series was improving and hitting its stride. Regrettably, viewers didn’t seem to be drawn to the fifth Star Trek installment featuring the Enterprise venturing into space for the first time. However, one might wonder if viewership would have increased had the show stayed true to its original concept?

As a devoted fan, I’d like to share an intriguing tidbit I learned from Star Trek: Enterprise’s season one Blu-Ray supplementary content. Brannon Braga, in his own words [via Screenrant], revealed that the initial concept of the series centered around the construction of the first starship and forging a connection with the Vulcans. This insight sheds new light on the series’ early stages!

The show originally… was supposed to be set on Earth. The show Rick and I pitched to the studio was a show set on Earth. The Klingons attacked Earth. Same things, general things, happened, but it was all about the building of the first starship and… the Vulcan thing was all there… It was about getting the crew together. It was about Archer putting a crew together to be the first people who went out. It was either the end of the season or somewhere midseason the ship was going to be launched. So it was a much more mud on the boots, gritty show set on Earth for the first large part of the season. So launching the ship was going to be a much bigger deal.

As a longtime Star Trek fan with over three decades of passion for the franchise under my belt, I find myself pondering about the original concept of Star Trek: Enterprise. Having followed the series and its evolution since its inception, I can’t help but wonder if it could have been better had it stuck to its roots.

The upcoming Starfleet Academy series, hailing from the franchise, seems set to devote a significant amount of time to events happening on planet surfaces. If this series manages to capture viewers’ attention, it could signal that fans are receptive to a show that doesn’t exclusively revolve around space travel. While the grounded concept may find favor with audiences today, it might have been challenging for viewers accustomed to Star Trek: Enterprise’s space-focused narrative from 1987 to 2001 to accept such a grounded Trek series back then due to the extensive space exploration presented during that period.

If Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is proving popular as a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, it might be that another prequel could also achieve success by focusing on events happening on Earth. It’s unlikely fans would enjoy a Star Trek series without the thrilling action and excitement that other Star Trek shows are known for. Although we can’t predict the future of Star Trek: Enterprise, it’s worth considering if a new prequel could meet with success.
