Wonder Woman and Shadow of Mordor Nemesis System Patent is Held By WB Games Until August 2026

It appears that Monolith Productions, the developer behind games like F.E.A.R., Condemned, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, has been shut down by Warner Bros. Their in-development Wonder Woman game has also been cancelled. With this closure, you might be curious about the future of their groundbreaking ‘Nemesis system’ technology. Interestingly, Warner Bros. owns a patent on this technology that won’t expire until 2036, so it could potentially be utilized in other projects in the future.

In 2014, Monolith unveiled the Nemesis system for the game “Shadow of Mordor,” and continued to use it in its 2017 sequel “Shadow of War.” Originally intended for use in “Wonder Woman,” this system is an advanced AI that allows enemies to recall past encounters, develop over time with each interaction, and display physical changes like scars.

It remains unclear if another game will adopt Monolith’s Nemesis system, but that might happen if Warner Bros. chooses to share the technology with other studios. Game File’s Stephen Totilo, through GameSpot, highlighted this possibility, noting that a significant portion of WB’s patent still stands for over a decade. However, it’s important to mention that the patent could expire if Warner Bros. neglects to pay the necessary fee to keep it active.

Lawyer Richard Hoeg noted that “patents are frequently granted for external usage”, implying that whether Warner Bros. keeps the Nemesis system concealed is solely their decision. Additionally, it’s plausible that they could grant permission to utilize the technology as a means to recoup the reported $100 million+ investment in Wonder Woman, which faced challenges during production.

The termination of Wonder Woman‘s series and the shutting down of Monolith’s production, undeniably, brings about a significant sense of dismay. This sentiment is echoed by comic book writer Gail Simone, who served as a consultant on the game. You can find her heartfelt comments about the project and its dedicated team by clicking here.
