Wonder Woman and Robin play fear vs love against Captain Boomerang

As a lifelong fan who’s witnessed the antics of countless superheroes, I must confess that Captain Boomerang has always been a character that left me scratching my head more than once. He’s a jester in a world full of kings and queens, a clown in a circus of titans. Yet, there’s something about his brashness and stubbornness that keeps me hooked.

Captain Boomerang might seem like a mere joke due to his lighthearted demeanor, frequent defeats at the hands of the Flash, and long-standing service under Amanda Waller. However, despite his comedic image, he’s proven time and again that he’s no pushover, and he knows how to take care of himself. This lesson about Boomerang’s resilience is vividly illustrated in Tom King’s Wonder Woman issue 12, where both Damian Wayne (Robin) and Wonder Woman come to appreciate his toughness.

In issue number 2 of “Absolute Power,” Nightwing tasks Wonder Woman with locating Amanda Waller’s prison. Damian Wayne offers to accompany her on this mission. If there’s anyone who knows where Waller has the imprisoned heroes, it’s Captain Boomerang. With their combined skills, Diana and Damian stand a good chance of extracting information from Boomer.

A dilemma arose as they struggled to find a solution on how to extract his location. While Wonder Woman advocated for using love, Damian suggested resorting to torture. However, it turned out that neither approach was correct in the end.

Damian suspended him near several potential hazards, one of which involved the risk of death from an animal attack, followed by the warning of a beating with a baseball bat. Captain Boomerang has undergone extreme torment, including having a bomb implanted in his body. However, none of these methods had any effect on him.

Whenever Damian faltered, it was then that Wonder Woman’s approach came into play. She attempted various methods such as inviting him for a pleasant dinner, arranging a reunion between Boomerang and his son, and persuading him about the dire consequences of a world without heroes and its impending doom on Earth. Each encounter ended with Wonder Woman delivering a retaliatory blow after Boomerang hurled an insult at her.

Eventually, Captain Boomerang’s arrogance and lack of caution proved to be his downfall. While Wonder Woman and Damian Wayne shared a moment, Boomerang revealed their location by boasting about his skills and resistance to torture. As it was said in the movie Snatch, “Never underestimate the consistency of foolishness.” Similarly, as Wonder Woman put it, “There is a force greater than both love and fear – the blindness of overconfidence, embodied by the Flash Rogue.”
