Marvel is adding another series to Disney+ with “Wonder Man.” The show centers on Simon Williams, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, an actor trying to land the role of Wonder Man in a superhero film. During this process, Simon crosses paths with Trevor Slattery, played by Sir Ben Kingsley, a character viewers will recognize from previous Marvel movies like “Iron Man 3” and “Shang-Chi.” As Simon and Trevor work through the movie’s production, Simon begins to develop actual superpowers, transforming him into the Wonder Man we know from the comics.
The new MCU show focuses on the relationship between its two main characters, Simon and Trevor, and trailers have made that clear. The series promises a heartwarming friendship where each character finds what they’ve been missing in the other. In an interview with MovieWeb, stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen and Ben Kingsley were asked what each character uniquely provides for the other. Both actors emphasized the importance of their characters’ connection, giving similar answers about how they complete each other.
Sir Ben Kingsley believes Simon helps Trevor feel secure and valued. Trevor worries about not being noticed or listened to, but Simon provides him with the reassurance of being truly heard and seen, which Kingsley describes as a wonderful thing to receive from a colleague.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II described the setting as a personal sanctuary—a safe space where someone can truly be themselves. He emphasized trust, saying, ‘Your secret is safe with me.’
Viewers watching trailers for Wonder Man have noticed the unusual chemistry between Simon and Trevor, but this actually creates a fresh and interesting dynamic for the Marvel series. Wonder Man aims to be different from other MCU shows and introduce a compelling new hero, which is a challenge. Luckily, initial reviews suggest it might just succeed in standing out.
‘Wonder Man’ Already Has Critics Buzzing

Disney+
The new Marvel series Wonder Man has received very positive reviews, currently holding a 94% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Although this score could change as the release date approaches, it suggests the show is high quality, even in a market already full of superhero stories. Early reviews highlight the show’s strong characters and the promising partnership between Simon and Trevor. Critics also point out that Wonder Man cleverly avoids clichés and offers a unique, self-aware style, making it feel similar to shows like The Studio or The Franchise, but with Marvel’s own spin.

The upcoming Marvel series Wonder Man seems to be playfully aware of superhero tropes, possibly addressing criticisms of past Marvel projects. While it’s unclear how much the show will lean into this self-aware humor, early reactions suggest the characters, especially the dynamic between Simon and Trevor, are a major highlight. All eight episodes will be available on Disney+ starting January 27th, giving Marvel fans a fresh new hero to explore in the MCU.
