Will Anna Maxwell Martin ever make an Amandaland cameo? Here’s her very simple answer

Anna Maxwell Martin has strongly hinted she’d be open to returning for a spin-off of Motherland called Amandaland, if that meant revisiting her character and the show’s world.

The actress who starred as Julia Johnstone in Motherland has responded to questions about potentially working with Lucy Punch again, giving a clear answer and explaining her reasoning.

The new show focuses on Amanda, a former popular girl, as she adjusts to life after getting divorced. Creator Jenny Martin has firmly stated she won’t be returning to play the character herself.

She told The Times directly that the show really belongs to her co-stars – Philippa Dunne, who plays Amanda’s friend Anne, and Joanna Lumley, who plays her mother, Felicity.

I’m so excited! This spin-off is already two seasons in and they just renewed it for another one! It’s hilarious watching Amanda try to climb back up the social ladder – I can’t wait to see what trouble she gets into next!

Speaking about the final episode of the comedy series Motherland, which aired at Christmas 2022 and featured Julia dealing with her mother’s death, creator Holly Walsh felt it was a fitting end to the show.

I was honestly thrilled to hear how well Amandaland did! We all felt really good about the work we put into it, and were so proud of the final product, so even though it’s over, it doesn’t feel sad at all. It’s amazing to see it’s been a success, especially after being on shows like Line of Duty and Code 404.

While Martin might not be taking on the role of Julia in the near future, she’s been working on other projects, including the second season of the BBC’s popular mystery series, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, which has just been released.

Tamzin Martin will return as Lucy Betts-Taylor in season two of Ludwig. The show features David Mitchell as Ludwig, a puzzle creator who also solves crimes.

When asked about the upcoming second season on tonight’s The One Show, Martin didn’t reveal any plot details. He playfully hinted, “I can’t say anything! But it will be more of what you loved, hopefully even improved.”

Motherland and Amandaland are both streaming on BBC iPlayer.
