Wicked’s Jonathan Bailey says “there is a reason” for Fiyero’s blue eyes

As a die-hard musical enthusiast with a penchant for unraveling plot twists and a soft spot for captivating performances, I can hardly contain my excitement over the upcoming sequel to Wicked: Part 2. The enigmatic Fiyero, portrayed by the mesmerizing Jonathan Bailey, has sparked intrigue amongst fans with his striking blue eyes, and I’m no exception.

Actor Jonathan Bailey, known for his role in “Wicked,” hinted at the explanation as to why his character Fiyero has blue eyes in the film.

In the popular Netflix series Bridgerton, Bailey is recognized for his portrayal of Anthony. Interestingly, he isn’t fond of using contact lenses for a role, but he assures us it will be worth the effort when Wicked: Part 2 hits cinemas next year.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, I hinted at the explanation behind our actions in the next movie by subtly alluding to my character’s ‘blue, winking eyes.’

“I think it’ll be worth it,” he added.

Additionally, Bailey mentioned a line from the duet between Fiyero and Elphaba, sung by Cynthia Erivo, titled ‘As Long As You’re Mine’. He suggested that this lyric could provide a hint about the fate of his character.

He mentioned that within the duet’s lyrics, it says “‘You’ve made me see with different perspectives.’ This could offer a hint about what follows. In other words, there’s a purpose behind it.

Spoilers below if you haven’t watched Wicked and you’re not familiar with the stage musical. Read ahead at your own risk if you just can’t wait until November 2025 to find out what Bailey is probably hinting at.

In Act 2 of the musical, the lyrics that Bailey mentioned are from a scene where Fiyero and Elphaba express their feelings of affection for one another.

In the first part of “Wicked”, hints about Fiyero’s destiny are subtly introduced through the song ‘Dancing Through Life’, with lyrics like, “Life’s less painful for the carefree.” Meanwhile, Elphaba and Fiyero have a contentious introduction when she bluntly tells him to leave her alone.

All clues seem to point to the big revelation that Fiyero is none other than the Scarecrow.

In the play, Act 2 resumes with Fiyero being named Captain of the Guard and pursuing Elphaba. However, his true intention is to find her and assist in her escape, which he successfully accomplishes, causing the Wizard’s guards to capture him in a cornfield as revenge.

In the realm of my virtual world, I, the game character, attempted to protect Fiyero with an enchantment from my stronghold. However, things didn’t go as planned, and instead, he was transformed into a Straw Man figure, now invulnerable to harm.

Wicked is out now in cinemas. Wicked: Part 2 is released in cinemas on November 21, 2025.
