You absolutely shouldn’t miss Widow’s Bay. This surprisingly excellent show is nearly perfect in how it manages to both thrill and genuinely scare you – and we guarantee you’ll be captivated.
This 10-part series takes place in the eerie, small town of Widow’s Bay, where old stories and legends tell of a dark curse that affects everyone who lives there.
So, the town’s mayor, Tom Loftis – played by Matthew Rhys – is a bit of a stubborn guy. Everyone’s freaking out about these weird happenings, but he just brushes it all off as silly superstitions and refuses to listen to what the townspeople are telling him. Honestly, it’s like he wants something bad to happen, or maybe he just doesn’t care!

Loftis is determined to save his town, so he pushes forward with a plan to turn Widow’s Bay into a popular tourist destination. However, as visitors arrive, strange and terrifying things begin to happen, bringing local legends to life. Expect some genuinely frightening and suspenseful scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Despite being a horror series, Widow’s Bay isn’t just about cheap thrills. It’s a unique experience that skillfully covers a wide range of horror styles. The show smoothly shifts between genuinely creepy moments, surprisingly funny scenes, and sudden, startling scares, fully immersing viewers in the world of Widow’s Bay.
Katie Dippold masterfully blends humor and genuine frights in her work. She uses classic horror sounds – like unsettling growls and eerie music – to create a truly chilling experience, sometimes playing with these tropes for comedic effect, and other times letting the fear really sink in.
What to Read Next
The film skillfully blends comedy and suspense, creating a remarkable effect where you can be laughing one moment and feeling a chill the next. This seamless transition is particularly well done.
Widow’s Bay creates a lovely and immersive world, but it’s Rhys’s performance that truly brings it to life. He delivers a powerfully intense portrayal of Loftis, adding layers of endearing silliness and heartfelt sincerity to the character. The role is particularly moving when exploring Loftis’s experiences as a father, revealing a deep undercurrent of sadness.
Loftis’s son, Evan, is the most important thing in his life. As the story’s frightening events happen, you feel Loftis’s fear not only for himself, but especially for Evan. Rhys guides us through the story, and we experience the emotional fear alongside him, feeling it as if it were our own.

However, while the Beast in Me actor may lead, the ensemble cast is also impeccable.
Kate O’Flynn deserves all the praise for her complex and touching performance as Patricia – she’s both lovable and heartbreaking. Stephen Root is fantastic as the grumpy Wyke, and Dale Dickey is wonderful as Rosemary. However, K Callan truly shines in the later episodes and steals the show.
Callan’s portrayal of Ruth is captivating – you’ll feel both trapped and strangely comforted by her presence. It’s a performance that simultaneously makes you want to escape and stay right where you are.

Southwick’s portrayal of a difficult teenager could have easily become repetitive, but he uses it to deepen the complex dynamic between his character and his father. That said, this is just one of the emotionally resonant stories the show has to offer.
At first, Widow’s Bay offers gentle scares, but it gradually increases the tension in a captivating way. The story cleverly avoids clichés and becomes increasingly dark and intense as it progresses.
If you’ve been watching closely, this likely won’t come as a surprise. The series has always explored themes of loss, grief, and loneliness, and these feelings become even more pronounced as the story progresses.
The story’s conclusion is thought-provoking and might even challenge your sense of right and wrong, especially considering how the narrative unfolds. It’s a finale that will likely leave you wanting more and hoping for a continuation.

You can now watch the first two episodes of Widow’s Bay on Apple TV. New episodes will be released every Wednesday.
