Why Call the Midwife fans were wrong to complain about this off-putting storyline

As soon as Roger Noble from “Call the Midwife” (played by Conor O’Donnell) flung open the doors to Dr. Turner’s (Stephen Vincent McGann) clinic, a strong bond instantly formed between him and nurse Nancy Corrigan (Megan Cusack).

The holiday spirit, the romantic backdrop, or their playful glances were likely factors, but what really captured everyone’s hearts was an incredibly endearing interaction that left viewers charmed.

As I watched their whirlwind romance unfold during the holiday special, my initial admiration started to fade, and I found myself questioning whether this new guy in Nancy’s life was as virtuous as he seemed.

One fan on Instagram advised, “I have some doubts about him,” while another expressed, “Go slowly. Learn more about each other. I hope to witness them dating.

1. “The outcome won’t be happy; there’s definitely something unusual about him,” one viewer commented, while another stated, “If this were reality, it feels like manipulation or excessive affection – ‘love bombing’ vibes.”

2. “It seems destined for heartache; he appears off somehow,” one spectator remarked, and another noted, “In real life, it gives the impression of manipulation or overly affectionate behavior, similar to ‘love bombing.'”

3. “The end result will be sadness, something doesn’t feel right about him,” one fan suggested, while another observed, “If this were a real-life scenario, there are signs of potential manipulation or excessive affection – that’s what I call ‘love bombing.'”

4. “It looks like it won’t end well; he seems fishy somehow,” one observer pointed out, and another commented, “In the real world, it appears as though he might be manipulative or overly affectionate – that’s the feeling of ‘love bombing.'”

Viewer alarm wasn’t entirely misplaced. Even we noted a plethora of red flags.

In the premiere of season 14, a sense that something was off about their courtship grew stronger. Nancy and Roger quickly progressed from dating to becoming engaged, then moving away permanently. Additionally, they managed to appease Nancy’s mother-in-law and Colette (played by Francesca Fullilove), who addressed Roger as ‘uncle Roger’. This sudden family formation left viewers feeling increasingly uncomfortable.

Absolutely, it prompted them to flock to social media platforms, where the issue was once more debated and a quick decision made.

Once more, I found myself joining the chorus of fans shouting “lovebomber!” However, the feelings seemed to oscillate, some expressing concern that the connection might have been hastily forged while others were convinced that there was something suspicious about Roger.

The swift progression of their relationship seemed suspicious, which is unusual for a series that typically allows its stories to unfold gradually, except during holiday episodes.

In another interpretation, the storytelling in “Call the Midwife” appears more purposeful rather than clumsy.

According to Radio Times, Cusack has revealed that she plans to depart from the series. She explained her choice by saying, “I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge, but I’m just starting out in my career and I feel it’s time to take a bold step forward.

Her mysterious disappearance during the timeframe from the start to the end of the season might lead us to perceive the plot in a new perspective.

It might be pointed out that Cusack’s character, upon departing, didn’t require a flawless, stereotypically happy conclusion. Not all characters need to conclude their journey with a romantic sweep, involving marriage and a child, in order to exit a series. However, we propose that this was the most suitable method for concluding the transformation of this previously troubled character.

Four years ago, when I first stepped into the show as Nancy, I was on my own. My little girl Colette, who I yearned to reunite with permanently, wasn’t by my side then, having been fostered. Throughout the journey, I strived to build a secure life for us both. This path wasn’t easy; it forced me to confront the scars of my own childhood abandonment. But I persevered, overcoming the harshness and lack of love from my upbringing. In the end, I managed to construct the close-knit family I had always dreamed of.

Colette serves as more than just family for Nancy, providing her with everything one could hope for. Yet, it’s an extraordinary blessing for this character to experience a joy that she never expected to find.

It was fitting that this role perfectly concluded Cusack’s tenure on the show, as she portrayed Nancy so beautifully with her powerful and consistently optimistic performance.

The show “Call the Midwife” was due to the beloved character, who battled through numerous hardships, that their heartwarming farewell deserves appreciation. Although it may stir up moments of discomfort at times.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
