Why Are Millions Flocking to The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered?
As a fellow gamer, I’ve got some exciting news to share! You probably didn’t need a crystal ball to see this coming, but it’s officially confirmed – The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered (although let’s be real, it feels more like a remake in all but the name) has been a massive success. It’s pulling in players just as we’d expect from a major new Elder Scrolls release! Within mere days of its launch earlier this month, Bethesda announced that a whopping four million gamers across all platforms have already dived into this epic world. On Steam alone, the game reached over 216,000 concurrent players – quite impressive considering it’s also available on the Windows Store and PC Game Pass. This just goes to show how wide its appeal is as an open-world action RPG!
It’s important to note that the release of “Oblivion Remastered” was not typical, given the unusual circumstances surrounding it. These circumstances make its immediate success even more striking. There were persistent rumors suggesting a remaster or remake of the popular 2006 RPG from Bethesda was in development. As time passed, it became increasingly probable that it would be released sometime in spring 2025. The rumors and speculation then narrowed down to a potential shadow drop around late April, and indeed, on April 22nd, “The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered,” developed by Bethesda Game Studios and Virtuos, was simultaneously unveiled and launched on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. The game retails for $50 and is available on Game Pass.

Besides being a fresh Elder Scrolls release, what makes Oblivion Remastered so successful right now? Several elements contribute to its success, as with most cases. The primary factor is that it’s the latest major Elder Scrolls game since Skyrim, which was released in 2011 – nearly a decade and a half ago. With fan anticipation for a new Elder Scrolls title reaching an all-time high, and The Elder Scrolls 6 still years away, the demand has only grown over time. Therefore, releasing Oblivion Remastered now couldn’t have been more opportune.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that unlike games such as Skyrim, which has been repeatedly remastered or ported over the years, Oblivion is quite unique in this aspect. Given its near two-decade age, Oblivion could greatly profit from improvements to gameplay mechanics, technology, graphics, and more. Interestingly, Bethesda has not made significant changes to the game since its initial release, with few re-releases. Consequently, it’s hardly surprising that many players are eager to experience an improved version of this classic title.
The game has been substantially improved and upgraded, to put it mildly. Frankly, the term “Remastered” in the title doesn’t quite capture the magnitude of enhancements made to the core experience. It’s transitioned to Unreal Engine 5, undergoing a total visual transformation with advanced lighting, shadows, reflections, water effects, increased environment density, updated character and enemy models, and much more. The gameplay has been refined as well, with adjustments to progression, level scaling, and quality of life improvements such as an overhauled user interface. To summarize, the list of changes and improvements in Oblivion Remastered is extensive. While it retains its original essence, many technical constraints and outdated aspects from the original game have been carried over, like its tendency to glitch or how sparsely populated some cities and the world can be. However, this upgrade far surpasses what one might expect from a game with “Remastered” in its title.
In essence, this offers a fantastic opportunity for both old and new fans to enjoy the game. For those who have previously delved into Cyrodiil, they’ll recognize a comfortably familiar environment, but with smart upgrades that enhance the game without drastically altering its core aspects. On the other hand, the changes made, which are far from superficial or cosmetic, manage to polish and bring the experience up-to-date in a way that newcomers won’t find it overly outdated.
Essentially, revisiting Oblivion brings into focus some of the ways Skyrim refined and simplified the Elder Scrolls structure. To be clear, Skyrim is undeniably a remarkable game, capable of capturing your attention for countless hours. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that its advancement mechanics, compared to Oblivion, seem more automated in Skyrim, while in Oblivion, they appear more interactive and provide players with greater control over their character’s development and progression.
Oblivion Remastered”. This is particularly noteworthy given that it’s an “Elder Scrolls” game launched at a lower price and accessible through Game Pass.
As a devoted fan, I must admit that I was initially skeptical about the idea of a sudden release like “Oblivion Remastered.” However, Microsoft and Bethesda have proven me wrong by masterfully executing this shadow drop. The massive player base it has attracted and the positive feedback from both players and critics are clear indications of their success. I can only cross my fingers and hope that they will continue to create similar projects in the future. It’s exciting to hear rumors about a possible remaster of “Fallout 3” from 2008, let’s keep our fingers crossed that it turns out to be true. For now, I can’t wait to dive back into the grandeur of Cyrodiil once again.
