Why Amazon Prime’s hit anti-superhero series ‘The Boys’ keeps getting bigger
As a dedicated fan who has been following “The Boys” since its inception, I can confidently say that this superhero satire has become my favorite escape from the chaos of the real world. The fact that its fourth season is the most-watched yet, according to Amazon, only solidifies its position as a must-watch series.
With each passing day, the real world growing increasingly bizarre, the appeal of Amazon’s witty superhero satire “The Boys” continues to soar.
Could it just be luck? Possibly. The latest season of the bold television show that portrays a world where superheroes are deeply rooted in various aspects of American culture, often with negative consequences, has become the most-viewed one yet, as reported by Amazon.
Globally, over 55 million individuals have tuned into at least a part of Season 4 of “The Boys” within the 39-day period following its debut. Remarkably, the viewership has grown by an impressive 20% compared to Season 3.
In the United States, a show titled “The Boys,” which revolves around a group of vigilantes targeting uncontrollable superhumans, has consistently ranked among Nielsen’s top 10 streaming series for four consecutive weeks since its debut in June. Each week, the entire series accumulates over one billion minutes of viewership.
In a recent statement, Vernon Sanders, the head of television at Amazon MGM Studios (the producers of “The Boys” along with Sony Pictures Television), noted that the current run of eight episodes is the second-most popular season for this TV series on Prime Video, making history for the platform.
As a devoted cinephile, I rarely witness an increase in ratings during the fourth season of a TV series. However, my experience working with NBC on current programming has often left me accustomed to watching audiences gradually dwindle as shows mature. But here’s something refreshingly different!
However, Sanders expressed that he comprehends why “The Boys,” a series co-created by Eric Kripke from the comic books of Garth Ennis and Darick Robinson, continues to attract new followers. He hypothesizes that those who initially dismissed it as just another superhero story within the hierarchical genre are reconsidering their decision.
“Sanders stated that the packaging might be misleading. Many individuals, upon first glance at a series titled ‘The Boys’ depicting flawed superheroes, might assume it wouldn’t appeal to them. However, as more people discover it, they find out how multi-layered and captivating its content truly is.”
It’s advantageous for Amazon’s Prime Video that the series “The Boys” is popular, as they are actively expanding into advertising-supported streaming. Currently, Prime Video accounts for approximately one-third of Netflix’s TV viewing share, according to Nielsen. However, with an estimated ability to reach 115 million U.S. viewers through advertisements (compared to Netflix’s reported 13 million users on their ad-supported tier), the more successful shows they have, the more attractive they become to advertisers.
As someone who has navigated through the treacherous waters of social media, marketing, TV news, and corporate corruption for many years, I can attest to the fact that the series offers a witty and sarcastic perspective on these very real issues that we all face in our daily lives. For instance, the satirical portrayal of the expansion of superheroes into government is both amusing and thought-provoking, making one wonder if our own leaders are not sometimes just as self-serving. The catchphrase “Let’s make America super again” is particularly apt, given the current political climate, where extremist views seem to dominate the airwaves. In short, this series provides a much-needed dose of humor and insight in these trying times.
Despite the swift changes in popular culture, where yesterday’s satire might be today’s reality, the program continues to remain relevant and up-to-date.
In a somewhat unsettling coincidence, the finale of “The Boys” series occurred last month, where it depicted a presidential assassination attempt. Interestingly, this episode was set to release only a few days after an attempted attack on former President Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania. As a result, Amazon Prime Video modified the title of the episode from “Assassination Run” and included a disclaimer condemning political violence.
“Sanders expressed some anxiety, he mentioned. After giving it some thought and reflection over a couple of days, we came to the conclusion that we were going to share this information regardless, so we decided to adhere to our original plan.”
The exploration of how fear manipulation undermines democratic structures in the show is striking a chord beyond the U.S. borders, with “The Boys” gaining significant popularity in countries like the United Kingdom, India, France, and Brazil – all nations grappling with right-wing populist political uprisings.
The success of “Gen V,” a spin-off featuring a youthful Legion of Super-Heroes-like group similar to those in the original series, has also contributed positively. Sanders pointed out that the younger, female demographic drawn to “Gen V,” which will continue with another season, is also discovering “The Boys.”
As an enthusiastic fan, I can’t help but notice how skillfully the producers of “The Boys” keep our pop culture dialogue vibrant with their surprise appearances and star-studded guests. For instance, who would have thought Will Ferrell would show up as a coach in a cinematic take on superhero A-Train? Each time a renowned figure graces our screens, I believe it piques the curiosity of more viewers, enticing them to tune in and join the fun.
Amazon is considering methods to continue the series past the fifth season, set for next year, as the show’s ongoing success has sparked these discussions, with the creators indicating that this would be its final season.
“Sanders stated, ‘Yes, we’ve had discussions with Eric Krippe and his team.’ They’ve been brainstorming ideas for what more they’d like to explore within this universe.”
