Invincible showrunner Robert Kirkman has explained why Aaron Paul did not return for season 4.
Inspired by the comic book series from Kirkman, Walker, and Ottley, Invincible tells the story of Mark Grayson, who gets superpowers just like his incredibly powerful superhero father, Omni-Man. The animated show boasts a star-studded voice cast, including Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Walton Goggins, Seth Rogen, Mark Hamill, and Zazie Beetz.
Paul provided the voice for Powerplex, a villain who is a scientist with high-tech enhancements. Powerplex blames Invincible for the deaths of his sister and niece and is seeking revenge.
In an interview with RadioTimes, Kirkman revealed that the actor wasn’t able to participate mostly because of his schedule. He explained that animation gives creators more freedom to follow the original comic book closely. Powerplex is still part of the Invincible universe, but he doesn’t appear as often in the comics. This makes it challenging to ask a very busy actor to record a small amount of voice work. You can read Kirkman’s full explanation below.
Animation offers a different creative process than live-action filmmaking. With live-action, scripts often need adjustments to accommodate actors and keep them involved. However, animation allows for greater fidelity to the original story.
The Powerplex character still appears occasionally, but a dedicated episode focusing on him would be fantastic – especially with Aaron Paul delivering a strong performance. However, it’s often challenging to get an actor like him to appear for just a short scene or two due to his busy schedule.
One of the biggest challenges is scheduling. Because we can’t guarantee an actor’s availability for animation work, we have to work around their other projects. Our cast is full of very popular actors, so there will inevitably be times when they’re simply unavailable.
Paul shared in late 2025 that he turned down the chance to return for season four because playing the character was emotionally draining. He explained that he fully immersed himself in the role of Powerplex, to the point where he felt disconnected and uncomfortable with the persona.

Powerplex experienced one of the most tragic storylines in the show. Driven by a desire for revenge against Mark, he created a powerful suit that could control electricity, intending to use it in a fight against Invincible. Unfortunately, his obsession went too far, and he unintentionally caused the deaths of his wife and son during the battle, resulting in a deeply sad ending to his story.
Since its premiere on Prime Video in 2021, Invincible has become known as a truly groundbreaking animated series. What makes it different is its intense action, continuing storyline, and faithful adaptation of the original comic book, setting it apart from many other superhero shows.
The show’s popularity has led people to compare it to big-name superhero franchises like Marvel and DC. Some critics believe its focus on characters lets it delve into deeper themes and storylines that most superhero movies don’t have time to develop.
Season 4 of Invincible will build on Mark Grayson’s journey as Earth’s protector, diving deeper into his relationship with Atom Eve. The season will also reveal more about the dangerous Viltrumite Empire and its leader, Thragg. Expect bigger, more impactful storylines than before, as season 4 adapts some of the most important events from the original comic book.
Even though Powerplex’s story seemed to finish in season 3, the character isn’t necessarily gone for good. Like in the original comics, he could reappear later on, possibly in a smaller role. This means the actor who plays him, Paul, could return in a future episode if the writers decide to bring him back and his schedule permits.
Currently, the team working on Invincible appears to be prioritizing the development of the overall story, setting the stage for some of the most significant arcs from the original comic book in future seasons.
Invincible season 4 premieres March 18 on Prime Video.
