Neil Forsyth, the creator of the hit show The Gold, has a new series on Netflix called Legends. If you’re wondering if the show is based on a true story or if the characters are inspired by real people, you’ve come to the right place.
These brave customs officers put themselves in danger, adopting new identities – known as their ‘Legends’ – to go undercover and fight Britain’s growing drug problem. They were motivated by a desire to make a real difference.
The story behind the Netflix drama seems like something from a movie, but the author has revealed the real-life events that inspired its dark, complex, and detailed plot.

Forsyth began his research by interviewing the individuals who experienced the events firsthand. As he listened to their stories, he discovered a truly remarkable narrative, as he explained in a press release.
As a fan, I was really interested to hear that the creator, Forsyth, had to streamline the story quite a bit. They explained that the real events were so complex and involved so many people that it would have been impossible to fit it all into just six episodes. It’s a tricky balance – taking a true story and making it work as compelling TV, because real life is rarely neat and tidy!
What to Read Next
We thoroughly researched the events and the people involved, then chose which characters to focus on for the story. Sometimes, these characters are based on multiple real people combined, allowing us to represent a wider range of experiences while staying true to the actual events and key incidents.
So what did inspire your new favourite series? Here’s what we know.

Was Legends’ Guy Stanton based on a real person?
Okay, so in the show, it was actually pretty easy to get Guy Stanton—Tom Burke plays him—to join this super-secret project his work offered. My wife, Sophie (Charlotte Ritchie), gave him a little nudge, and suddenly I went from being this frustrated guy checking bags at Heathrow to going undercover to bust a heroin ring in Turkey. There were a few challenges along the way, of course, but it all happened surprisingly fast!
The character Guy Stanton was modeled after a real individual, and his book served as the original idea for the series.
In an interview with The Times, the real Stanton complimented Tom Burke, the actor who played him in Legends, for accurately portraying his personality in the series.
In an interview with The Times, Stanton described his experiences as constantly being on guard, feeling betrayed, and living under suspicion. He explained that it was very challenging to process and required a long time to recover from.
Throughout the show, Steve Coogan’s character, Don, instructed his team to fully embody their cover identities, or “Legends,” but cautioned them that these personas would become a permanent part of them. This idea is reinforced by Stanton, who shared that he still feels connected to the personality of his Legend even after many years.
It’s been a long time since I’ve thought about that world, but he definitely left a lasting impact on me,” he said to The Times. “I’ve moved on from it now, but he remains with me, because I was the one who created him.

Now in his late 60s, Stanton explained that his reputation, known as ‘Legend,’ became widely recognized among criminals.
In 2022, he published a book called The Betrayer, which details how an undercover team went inside the international drug trade.
Forsyth based the character of Guy Stanton in Legends on a real person, but the other characters in the show are entirely fictional.

Who is Don in Netflix’s Legends?
Don leads the team of Legends, guiding and training them. Having been through tough experiences as an undercover operative, he’s not one to offer a lot of emotional support. However, Steve Coogan’s performance reveals a hidden protective side to the character, showing that despite his hardened exterior, he cares about his team.
Forsyth explained that the character played by Coogan was based on people he studied extensively.
Don brings a wealth of experience from his own undercover work and is now leading the Legends’ training, according to Forsyth.
On top of everything else, he’s responsible for leading the team. This is often the most challenging aspect of the job – dealing with the stress and internal conflicts of people working in demanding conditions.

Was Legends’ Bailey based on a real person?
Bailey starts out cautious and has a harder time adjusting to the fast-paced, high-pressure environment. He’s a fictional character, not modeled after any one specific individual.
I was reading an interview with Aml Ameen, the actor who played Bailey in ‘Legends,’ and he explained what made his character so valuable to the team. He said it was Bailey’s ability to ‘code switch’ – basically, knowing how to act and communicate differently depending on the situation. Ameen explained that growing up as a Black man in England back then meant you had to be able to navigate different social circles and adapt your communication style, and that’s what Bailey brought to the table.
Bailey is remarkably adaptable because of his varied life experiences. He’s moved between privileged and working-class environments, allowing him to easily fit into and succeed in diverse situations – he’s essentially a skilled performer who can handle anything.

Was Legends’ Kate based on a real person?
Kate wasn’t modeled after one specific person. Instead, as the author explained, she was inspired by many tough, working-class women who lived and worked in similar neighborhoods.
Forsyth highlighted the strong sense of team spirit Hayley Squires portrayed, which he said resonated with the actual Legends he interviewed.

Was Legends’ Erin based on a real person?
Similar to Kate, Erin (played by Jasmine Blackborow) embodied the spirit of many members of the team. Her character specifically represented the researchers who quietly supported the Legends by handling paperwork and creating convincing fake identities for them while they were on missions.
That work gave them the necessary documents – like licenses and identification – to establish new identities and combat crime legally, without becoming criminals themselves.
To accurately portray the character of Erin, Blackborow conducted her own research. She contacted the author of a blog about being a secretary in the 1990s, asking about the necessary training for the role. Blackborow found this conversation incredibly helpful in understanding what the job was really like during that time, as stated in a press release.
Legends is available to watch now on Netflix.
The latest issue of Living Legends, a vibrant, full-color 100-page tribute to Sir David Attenborough, is now available! You can purchase it at newsstands or online.
