Which Background Should You pick In Avowed?

In the realm of role-playing games (RPGs), Avowed, true to Obsidian’s signature style, offers an extraordinary degree of player choice. This flexibility begins with the character creation process in Avowed, which sets the stage exceptionally well. The character creator provides a multitude of customization options, each designed to empower you and provide a stronger sense of ownership over your character.

When designing your character, one crucial decision is selecting their backstory. This choice sets the foundation for much of what your character will be able to express within the game’s world, so it’s vital to make a thoughtful selection that fits your character well.

What Is A Character Background?

In Avowed, your character background serves a dual purpose: it helps paint a picture of your character’s past experiences and it provides your character with distinct dialogue choices that can be employed in various scenarios across the game.

There are five different character backgrounds to choose from.

  • Arcane Scholar
  • Court Augur
  • Noble Scion
  • Vanguard Scout
  • War Hero

Each of these provides your character with distinct conversational choices for various scenarios, labeled with the related backstory within the dialogue option during gameplay.

Each choice, in turn, assigns your Attribute Points uniquely and decides what your initial weapon will be in the game.

In the early stages of the game, you’ll come across a larger number of weapons, diminishing the significance of the initial weapon you start with.

During character creation, you have the flexibility to customize your Attribute Point distribution according to your preference, rather than being restricted by your background. This means you can adjust the points as you see fit at the beginning, and afterwards, you are free to make changes as well.

No matter what path you pick at the start, you’ll find that all weapons and skills will be accessible as you progress through the game.

Arcane Scholar

Scholars versed in the arcane are among the most extremely knowledgeable individuals you’ll encounter. If you opt for this background, your character has earned their degree from an academy, published a work that questioned the authority of a particular lord, and been invited to join the Imperial Court due to their intellectual prowess.

  • Starting Weapon: Dagger

Arcane Scholar Starting Attributes

If you pick an Arcane Scholar, your starting attributes will be:

Attribute Value Statistical Bonus
Might 2 +6% Damage | +20% Carrying Capacity
Constitution 0 +0% Max Health | +0% Poison/Bleed Resist
Dexterity 2 +7% Attack Speed | +13% Action Speed
Perception 2 +6% Critical Hit Chance | +10% Max Range
Intellect 3 +15 Max Essence | +18% Elemental Resist
Resolve 1 +5 Max Stamina | +12% Second Wind Efficiency

This backdrop subtly enhances various attributes, yet it doesn’t heavily favor stats crucial for survival during tough situations. It provides no additional maximum health, which makes it less advisable for builds primarily focused on absorbing damage.

The extra damage and extra Essence are going to allow you a lot of spellcasting potential.

Court Augur

Court Augurs possess extraordinary perception, able to discern the unseen and foretell future events. If your character operates covertly, amassing influence while keeping it hidden from others, selecting a Court Augur as a character might suit you well.

  • Starting Weapon: Mace

Court Augur Starting Attributes

If you choose to be a Court Augur, your default attribute point allocation will be:

Attribute Value Statistical Bonus
Might 0 +0% Damage | +0% Carry Capacity
Constitution 0 +0% Max Health | +0% Poison/Bleed Resist
Dexterity 2 +7% Attack Speed | +13% Action Speed
Perception 3 +9% Critical Hit Chance | +15% Max Range
Intellect 3 +15 Max Essence | +18% Elemental Resist
Resolve 2 +10 Max Stamina | +23% Second Wind Efficiency

Court Augurs are an excellent choice for any build that relies heavily on stamina and magical energy (Essence), but lacks the capacity to withstand multiple blows. With your high stamina level, you’ll be able to evade attacks frequently and strike back, and the additional Essence will enable you to cast more spells.

A character that uses a bow and wand combo could do particularly well with this background.

Noble Scion

Your character hails from a family that was once esteemed but has since fallen into disfavor. As a humble supplicant, they pleaded with the emperor for leniency, and were given a second chance. From that point on, they gradually rose in importance within the court.

  • Starting Weapon: Sword

Noble Scion Starting Attributes

Noble Scion’s have the following starting attributes:

Attribute Value Statistical Bonus
Might 2 +6% Damage | +20% Carry Capacity
Constitution 1 +5% Max Health | +6% Poison/Bleed Resist
Dexterity 2 +7% Attack Speed | +13% Action Speed
Perception 2 +6% Critical Hit Chance | +10% Elemental Resist
Intellect 2 +10 Max Essence | +12% Elemental Resist
Resolve 1 +5 Max Stamina | +12% Second Wind Efficiency

Distinguished Heirs exhibit a versatile set of characteristics from the get-go, with their attributes evenly distributed. The lowest values among these affect their maximum health and endurance, positioning them more towards the side of damage-dealing characters, rather than those focused on self-sustenance. This damage potential can manifest in various forms.

Vanguard Scout

Born into a humble family with meager resources, Vanguard Scouts have learned to rely on their own abilities to survive. Your character was destined for an untimely end until the Emperor intervened to spare your life. You feel most comfortable and at ease when immersed in natural surroundings.

  • Starting Weapon: Axe

Vanguard Scout Starting Attributes

If you choose to be a Vanguard Scout, you’ll have the following starting attributes:

Attribute Value Statistical Bonus
Might 1 +3 Damage | +10% Carry Capacity
Constitution 2 +10% Max Health | +12% Poison/Bleed Resist
Dexterity 2 +7% Attack Speed | +13% Action Speed
Perception 3 +9% Critical Hit Chance | +15% Max Range
Intellect 1 +5 Max Essence | +6% Elemental Resist
Resolve 1 +5 Max Stamina | +12% Second Wind Efficiency

Vanguard Scouts possess well-rounded attributes, offering flexibility to explore various paths. They boast a robust initial health level and an exceptional critical hit probability.

Their base attack damage may not be particularly strong, but by raising their Power level through Perception, they could potentially inflict significant damage.

War Hero

War heroes, as the name suggests, are individuals who have demonstrated courage and bravery in actual combat situations. This doesn’t imply that they haven’t suffered from the hardships of war, but rather they have developed strategies to cope with its challenges.

  • Starting Weapon: Spear

War Hero Starting Attributes

As a War Hero, you’ll start with attribute point allocation looking like this:

Attribute Value Statistical Bonus
Might 3 +9% Damage | +30% Carry Capacity
Constitution 2 +10% Max Health | +12% Poison/Bleed Resist
Dexterity 1 +4% Attack Speed | +7% Action Speed
Perception 1 +3% Critical Hit Chance | +5% Max Range
Intellect 0 +0 Max Essence | +0% Elemental Resist
Resolve 3 +15 Max Stamina | +35% Second Wind Efficiency

War Heroes may exhibit a touch of brashness, but they certainly deliver a powerful blow. They boast the maximum initial Might and Resolve, implying their assaults will inflict substantial damage, and they’re capable of attacking frequently.

They lack intellectual abilities and keen perception, yet leveraging the talents of a war hero can result in a highly formidable character.
