Where Winds Meet player count soars as fans question how it’s free to play

Where Winds Meet has quickly become a hit on Steam, and many players are surprised that the expansive open-world game doesn’t cost anything to play.

Okay, so Everstone Studios’ new wuxia RPG is blowing up. Since it launched globally on November 14th, it’s been breaking its own records for player numbers. I checked SteamDB, and it hit a peak of almost 194,000 players on November 16th – that’s insane! It’s really cool to see so many people jumping in.

Additionally, these numbers don’t include sales from the PlayStation 5, as Where Winds Meet is only available on that console.

The studio announced that within 24 hours, the total number of players reached the 2 million mark.

Players are surprised that Where Winds Meet, which has been widely praised for its beautiful world, graphics, and ambitious scale, isn’t priced higher.

Players “can’t believe” the game is free

Many people on social media have expressed surprise that “Where Winds Meet” was released for free.

Many Steam users have commented that the game is surprisingly free, noting its “Very Positive” reviews despite having no price tag.

People were shocked the game was free, with one user joking they expected a surprise bill or even someone showing up at their door to charge them for playing. Another simply expressed disbelief that such a game could be offered at no cost.

Where Winds Meet’s all-time concurrent player record on Steam as of November 16, 2025.

I’ve been checking out the subreddit for Where Winds Meet, and honestly, I’m seeing the same reaction everywhere. One thread perfectly sums it up – someone said their jaw dropped when they got to Kaifeng city and couldn’t believe this level of detail was in a free-to-play game. It’s seriously impressive!

What’s the downside? If you don’t care about makeup at all, there isn’t one. But if you’re interested in fashion and beauty, Where Winds Meet makes most of its money through cosmetic purchases.

It’s too soon to say for sure, but based on what we’ve seen so far, the game doesn’t seem to offer any purchases that would give players an unfair advantage.
