Where to find the Skeleton Key in Oblivion so you can stop breaking all your lockpicks
In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, lockpicking may prove challenging due to its distinct mechanics compared to later Bethesda RPGs. However, there’s a handy item that can significantly simplify your life: the Skeleton Key. If you frequently find yourself snapping lockpicks, then the Skeleton Key is just what you’re looking for.
The Skeleton Key is an indestructible tool that functions as a lockpick and significantly increases your Security ability by 40 points. Not only does it simplify the process of picking locks, but it eliminates the need for manual lockpicking because you can repeatedly click the auto-attempt button to force open any lock. Moreover, the Skeleton Key remains intact, allowing you to keep trying with endless attempts until the auto-attempt is successful.
How to Get the Skeleton Key in Oblivion
Similar to many impressive items found in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the Skeleton Key is considered a Daedric Artifact. Unlike other artifacts, obtaining this key requires completion of a specific Daedric questline. Fortunately, the suggested level for acquiring this item isn’t particularly high.
Skeleton key quest: Nocturnal
In the game Oblivion, the mission to obtain the Skeleton Key is known as “Nocturnal Quest.” You can initiate this quest by traveling to the Nocturnal Shrine, which lies to the north of Leyawiin once you’ve reached level 10. Leyawiin is situated in the southern region of Cyrodiil, close to the coast. Upon reaching the shrine, your task will be to retrieve the Eye of Nocturnal that was stolen.
Go to Leyawiin
Your quest to find the Eye of Nocturnal leads you to the city of Leyawiin, known for its cunning inhabitants. The two prime suspects in this case are Weebam-Na and Bejeen, Argonian residents. Begin your probe at Weebam-Na’s residence, which stands in the heart of the town, and question either of these two Argonians about the Eye of Nocturnal.
Just as anticipated, they both claim innocence regarding the artifact heist. After chatting them up, I slip away to a dimly lit nook in the house to secretly listen in on their conversation without being spotted. If my Stealth abilities aren’t up to par for staying unnoticed, I might have to guzzle an invisibility potion or conjure a concealment spell to blend in more effectively.
After the Argonians believe you’ve departed, they’ll discuss freely about the Eye of Nocturnal. It seems that the relic is hidden within Tidewater Cave, located southeast of Leyawiin. To proceed with your investigation, exit the town and make your way towards Tidewater Cave.
Go to Tidewater Cave
As a seasoned adventurer, I can confidently say that the Tidewater Cave is a relatively uncomplicated labyrinth. It teems with trolls and common foes, making it a manageable challenge for those who’ve barely scraped past level 10.
To locate the Eye of Nocturnal inside Tidewater Cave, continue taking left turns throughout your journey. Eventually, you will come across a profoundly flooded tunnel with a water-logged treasure chest lying at its base. The Eye of Nocturnal is situated adjacent to this submerged chest and emits a brilliant, luminescent glow, making it quite conspicuous.
Go to Nocturnal’s Shrine
Currently, you have two options ahead: You could proceed with exploring Tidewater Cave further, or return to the Nocturnal Shrine to hand over the artifact.
After placing the artifact back at the Nocturnal Shrine, you’ll receive the indestructible Skeleton Key as a token of appreciation. This key will never fail, no matter how many locks you attempt to open, and it grants a permanent Fortify Security bonus that boosts your Security skill by 40 points while it remains in your possession. Happy lock-picking without worries!
Skeleton Key console command
If you prefer not to embark on the quest, you have the option to acquire the Skeleton Key by utilizing Oblivion console commands and adding it directly to your inventory.
- Press the tilde (~) key to open the command line.
- Type “player.additem 0000000b 1” without the quotation marks and hit Enter.
Enjoy your Skeleton Key!
Because the Skeleton Key doesn’t usually break, it’s sufficient to have only one in your collection. However, you’re free to keep more if you prefer. Just remember that changing the number in the console command adjusts how many keys you possess. It’s useful to know this command in case you ever lose your thieving tool and need to restore it, which could happen in unusual situations such as getting arrested.
