On your journey through the vibrant realms of Avowed, your allies are there to support you during combat. With their special skills that can revive, attack, and uncover secret spots, they significantly contribute to the overall experience. Your mission to eradicate the enigmatic sickness called Dreamscourge heavily relies on them. Occasionally, a symbol (!) might appear next to your ally’s health indicators in the bottom left corner of the screen. This exclamation mark is a signal that there’s something important you should attend to concerning your companion in Avowed.

Where are companion health bars and the ‘!’?

Every character you’re with has a health meter and a distinctive symbol in the lower-left part of your screen interface. This small symbol helps identify whose health meter corresponds to whom, however, a warning sign might pop up occasionally.

In the game, it isn’t initially obvious what the intermittent small icon represents. Yet, understanding this symbol is crucial if you’re eager to delve deeper into the game’s background and discover more about your journey’s companions.

What do the exclamation marks mean by companion health bars in Avowed?

In simpler terms, when you see the ‘!’ symbol, it means a new conversation with one of your companions is available for you. You can engage in these conversations whenever you like by visiting your Party Camp (represented by the pink Adra icons on your map). Once there, simply approach them and press the X button. You’ll notice the exclamation mark above their head in a speech bubble as well.

This conversation will begin right away, and it usually revolves around recent developments in the main storyline or choices made during a side quest. For instance, when I chose to confront the smugglers during the ‘Escape Plan’ side quest early in the game, Kai praised me for my bravery.

In some cases, certain chats might be more engaging than others, but don’t overlook them! If you aim to strengthen your bond and gather more insights about those around you, seize every chance to converse when you notice the exclamation point pop up.

After chatting with them once, the exclamation mark might linger, indicating that they have more to share or discuss. Keep conversing with them until the exclamation point vanishes from their icon in your Head-Up Display (HUD), and you’ll be confident that you’ve heard all they wanted to express.
