Channel 5’s new drama, The Hardacres, has quickly gained popularity with its mix of family drama, love stories, and characters striving for a better life. Many viewers are curious to know if the story of the Hardacre family is based on a true story, despite the show’s historical setting.
While the series realistically depicts the difficulties and social divisions of Victorian England, the Hardacre family is actually made up. The Channel 5 drama is based on a popular book series that originally came out fifty years ago.
This Thursday’s episode showed how fragile the Hardacre family is since Sam unexpectedly fell ill. While Mary tended to her husband, worried he had the flu, their children struggled with problems at work, romantic issues, and concerns about what the future holds for Hardacre Hall.

Meanwhile, Lady Imelda Hansen kept scheming against the Hardacre family, using Liza’s blossoming romance with Captain Edward Blackwood to try and ruin their good name.
Okay, so I just found out that The Hardacres, even though it feels super real, isn’t actually about one specific family. It’s based on this book series called The Hardacre Family Saga by C.L. Skelton, which came out way back in 1976! Apparently, the books follow this working-class family from Yorkshire over several generations, and it’s all about how they go from being really poor to becoming rich and powerful. It’s a pretty epic story, honestly.
What to Read Next
The Channel 5 series currently shows the Hardacre family’s beginnings in Victorian times, following Sam and Mary as they climb from poverty to wealth and social status. But the books actually tell the story of the family over a much longer period of time.
The TV series is currently set in the 1800s, but the novels it’s based on continue the family’s story into the 1950s. This leaves room for the show to explore later years in future seasons, if it’s renewed.
The story started with the novel Hardacre, a long, 600-page book that follows the life of Sam Hardacre. The second book, Hardacre’s Luck, picks up the story with the next generation of the family, set in Yorkshire and London many years later.

While the show is based on the books, the producers have made some changes for television, especially in the first season. Amy Roberts and Loren McLaughlan, the show’s executive producers, told Radio Times that they intentionally expanded the story to focus more on the entire family, not just Sam.
Loren explained that their show takes inspiration from the book rather than being a direct retelling. They made this clear from the start by shifting the focus away from just Sam, the main character in the book. This is particularly evident in the second season, where the stories of Mary, Joe, Liza, and Harry are now just as important as Sam’s journey.
The production team prioritized creating a believable and realistic world for the show. Director Rachel Carey explained that staying true to history was a key focus during filming. She wanted the series to feel relevant to modern audiences while still respecting the past, and she was determined to avoid taking liberties with historical facts.

The team’s commitment to authenticity went beyond just the clothes and what the characters said. Rachel explained that a major hurdle during filming was locating sets that truly looked like they belonged in the Victorian period. “It was surprisingly hard to find places that felt historically accurate,” she noted.
Despite being set in Yorkshire, the series was actually filmed throughout Ireland, primarily in and around Dublin and County Wicklow. Cabinteely House, an eighteenth-century estate, served as the outside of Hardacre Hall, and the harbor at Bray stood in for the rough, working docks depicted during the family’s difficult times.
Actress Michele Dotrice, who plays Lady Imelda Hansen, especially enjoyed filming in Ireland. “It was a real joy to film there for the first time, and I had the best time,” she shared.
The Hardacres airs Thursdays from 9pm on Channel 5.
