Michael Giacchino is ready to make Werewolf by Night 2.
The Disney+ special marked Michael Giacchino’s debut as a director, following his successful career composing award-winning music. It was also Marvel’s first significant exploration of the supernatural. Gael García Bernal starred as Jack Russell, a monster hunter who attends a gathering with others to compete for the Bloodstone – all while secretly battling a werewolf curse and pursuing his own hidden agenda.
Featuring Laura Donnelly and Harriet Sansom Harris, Werewolf by Night was a big success when it came out in October 2022. Critics loved its old-fashioned monster movie feel, and it was a fun break from some of the more controversial Marvel projects in Phase Four. A remastered, full-color version was then released as part of Disney+’s Hallowstream collection in 2023.
Michael Giacchino, speaking with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant at the Spider-Man: Brand New Day premiere, shared an update about possibly directing Werewolf by Night 2. He encouraged fans who enjoyed the first Marvel special to let Marvel Studios know they want a sequel.
The Academy Award winner also shared that he and Marvel are discussing a second Werewolf by Night installment. However, he noted that these projects take a long time to develop and require extensive planning before production can begin.
Michael Giacchino believes that timing and precision are crucial in filmmaking, and the process often takes longer than expected. Ultimately, he hopes audiences will enjoy future installments of ‘Werewolf by Night.’
Following the positive reception of Werewolf by Night, many believed a sequel was likely. Both Brian Gay, a co-executive producer, and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige indicated the first film would launch the MCU’s foray into supernatural stories and monster characters. Director Michael Giacchino has often hinted at ideas for continuing the story from where the special left off, and reports in late 2025 suggested development on a second installment had begun.
Marvel never officially confirmed or denied the report about Werewolf by Night 2. The likely reason for the lack of updates is that Marvel has been scaling back its number of releases after some recent movies didn’t perform well with audiences or critics. Kevin Feige recently admitted the studio prioritized making a lot of content over ensuring its quality, which is why there aren’t any new Marvel movies planned between Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
While rumors about Werewolf by Night 2 started shortly after the first special aired, Marvel’s presentation at San Diego Comic-Con in 2026 suggested development was now actively progressing. They also officially announced Ryan Gosling will star in a new Ghost Rider film directed by Shawn Levy, hinting that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding to include more supernatural stories – building on themes first introduced in Moon Knight with Oscar Isaac.
Since the first Werewolf by Night special felt like a separate story with only loose connections to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it makes sense to release a sequel after the upcoming Secret Wars movie. Secret Wars is expected to be a soft reboot for the franchise, and waiting would avoid needing to rewrite any parts of the Werewolf by Night story to fit into the larger MCU. Plus, it would give the MCU a chance to establish a new direction after the Infinity Saga and the Multiverse Saga.
