The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will finally open on December 11th. Announced back in 2006, this museum has been highly anticipated for nearly twenty years, and is now preparing to welcome visitors.

The new building covers an impressive 80,000 square meters and is a major landmark. Designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry – famous for projects like the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao – this Abu Dhabi location is the largest of the four Guggenheim museums worldwide. It features 11,600 square meters of indoor gallery space and a sprawling 23,000 square meters dedicated to outdoor exhibitions.

The building features 30 galleries that connect around a central, open space. Its exterior is covered with a striking arrangement of 10 cone-shaped structures – nine made of stainless-steel mesh and one crafted from onyx and glass. Reaching a height of 88 meters, the towers are designed to stay cool in the desert heat using natural methods like airflow and shade.

The museum’s collection has been developed over almost seventeen years and offers fresh viewpoints on art created since 1960. It particularly showcases work from North Africa, West Asia, and South Asia. The Guggenheim describes its approach to arranging the artwork as ‘transcultural,’ meaning it emphasizes connections between artists, their influences, and how ideas spread – rather than simply focusing on when and where things were made. Key themes explored in the collection include Abstractions, Popular Culture, Land, and Language & Storytelling.

According to Dr. Mariët Westermann, Director and CEO of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be a captivating destination that brings people together, sparking curiosity and joy for both the local community and visitors from around the globe. It will share numerous stories and create opportunities for engagement.

Stay tuned for more details.
