We Finally Know the Deal With Addam and Alyn of Hull on House of the Dragon
As a devoted fan of House of the Dragon, I was thrilled to finally unravel the mystery surrounding Addam and Alyn of Hull in Sunday’s heart-pounding episode. The confirmation that they are indeed the Velaryon brothers and Corlys’ illegitimate sons was a long-awaited revelation.
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Episode 6 of House of the Dragon Season 2.
In the recent episode of “House of the Dragon” Season 2, I learned that Alyn of Hull, who saved Corlys from the water during the Stepstones campaign, and his elder brother Addam are actually my illegitimate kin, belonging to the Velaryon lineage.
We witnessed an intriguing scene where Alyn, with silver, Velaryon-like hair visibly being shaved off as he conversed with Addam about their familial ties. Moreover, Corlys officially made Alyn his first mate in what seemed like a symbolic gesture of acknowledgment. With the demise of Rhaenys (Eve Best), Laena (Nanna Blondell), and the assumed death of Laenor (John Macmillan), Alyn and Addam are among the few remaining family members for Corlys. Following Bela’s (Bethany Antonia) refusal to become his heir in Episode 5, it appears Corlys has come to terms with the need to settle his affairs. Regrettably, Alyn doesn’t seem overly enthusiastic about assuming a role at his father’s side.

In this story, I’m accustomed to encountering the elite class and their constant jostling for position within society. But my character, Alyn, isn’t preoccupied with such matters. He simply focuses on doing his job well and knowing what he excels at. He couldn’t care less about those who sit comfortably in power, as that notion was shattered the moment he was born.
During this episode, Addam underwent an extraordinary metamorphosis from a humble shipbuilder to the realms’ latest dragon rider. After Team Black’s unsuccessful and fatal attempt to have Ser Steffon Darklyn (Anthony Flanagan) mount Seasmoke, Laenor’s former dragon sought a new rider. Since a dragon won’t allow another person to ride it while its current rider is still alive, Addam’s acquisition of Seasmoke seems illogical unless we assume Laenor perished in Essos somehow. Nonetheless, we will accept this turn of events.
In “Fire & Blood,” a companion novel to “A Song of Ice and Fire” that forms the basis for “House of the Dragon,” Addam and Alyn are identified as “dragonseed,” meaning they are descendants of Valyrian dragonlords and possess the ability to form a connection with dragons. However, there are whispers in the book that these brothers might be the illegitimate sons of Laenor instead of Corlys. This would make them part Targaryen due to Rhaenys’ lineage. In the series, it remains unclear why Corlys is unable to claim a dragon while his non-Targaryen offspring can bond with one. It’s possible that Corlys’ wife also has Targaryen ancestry if she passes on this ability to her children.
