Was Sophie actually pregnant in Bridgerton season 4? Why some fans might still need answers

Bridgerton season 4 part 2 spoilers follow.

Another season of Bridgerton has just finished, and it’s always a little sad when it ends! We’ve all enjoyed watching, and it’s hard to believe it’s over… but hopefully, it won’t be for good.

Season four has concluded, and while we know there will be a fifth season on Netflix, its return date is still unknown. However, the story isn’t completely finished – fans are wondering what happened to Sophie and Benedict’s baby! Many viewers are likely asking the same question.

What to Read Next

Watching Sophie mark off the days in her diary was a major source of suspense in her relationship with Benedict. When her period was significantly delayed, the surprise was greater than anything even Lady Whistledown could have reported.

Sophie Baek, the maid who insisted she wasn’t involved with Sir Benedict Bridgerton, believed she was pregnant. She felt nauseous, especially when smelling the cook’s pigeon stew, and even felt movement in her stomach, which only strengthened her belief.

Later, alone in her room, she clutched the drawing Benedict had made for her. It showed the cozy country cottage where they planned to build a life together, far from the judgment of others. Holding the sketch, she wasn’t just touching paper and pencil; she was holding onto their shared dreams and hopes for a future together.

The scene everyone was waiting for – the bathtub scene teased in the trailer – finally arrived. Sophie and Benedict shared a very intimate moment, but Sophie stopped things before they went further, explaining she couldn’t take the risk.

You might be wondering what the ‘risk’ was – it’s not as if Sophie could become pregnant again. However, that thought quickly disappeared as everyone focused on what Sophie and Benedict were up to in the bathtub.

Suddenly, the idea of having a baby seemed unimportant. Her focus shifted completely to finding her father’s will and helping Alice Mondrich with her daring scheme to bring Sophie to the palace for the Queen’s ball.

The finale was a surprisingly fun and captivating moment, taking viewers on an emotional journey right up to the very end when Benophie and their partner finally got married in a scene after the credits rolled.

Their wedding was just perfect – small, classy, and totally them. It was so sweet to see even Eloise starting to think marriage wasn’t so bad! But honestly, after all that happiness, a lot of us were still thinking about Sophie and wondering what ever happened with the whole pregnancy storyline. It felt a little unresolved, you know?

When the camera showed an empty room in the Bridgerton home, we briefly wondered if time had jumped ahead and we were about to see their new baby sleeping peacefully in a crib.

The camera then focused on a portrait of Sophie from the masquerade ball, clearly showing her face. Though it was a beautiful way to conclude the season – finally giving her a true sense of belonging – it still left viewers with unanswered questions.

You’re probably wondering about this, and it’s a fair point. The character previously said she wasn’t pregnant, even though the show focused on things like her calendar and her touching her stomach, which seemed to suggest otherwise.

In episode six, Sophie told Benedict, “I’m not pregnant. My period came last night, so I never was.”

It was said directly, while they talked in Bridgerton’s greenhouse about where their relationship stood. She seemed very straightforward – but something felt off, like she wasn’t telling the whole truth. The fact that she said it at that particular moment was a big clue.

Sophie confessed her false alarm while also ending things with Benedict. She tried to explain that their relationship – a maid and a gentleman – simply wouldn’t work, but he didn’t want to break up, as she’d anticipated.

The painful talk happened after Benedict argued with his older brother, Anthony, who strongly warned him that a relationship would destroy everything. Sophie accidentally overheard the entire conversation.

Sophie was a kind and giving person, and knowing her family’s past, she believed a relationship with Benedict and his family would be too difficult and potentially harmful. She felt it was the right thing to do to end things and spare them all the heartache.

Perhaps Bridgerton would have benefited from a dedicated scene showing Sophie learning she wasn’t pregnant, clearing up any confusion. It would have been powerful to see her process that information and her feelings about it – whether she felt relieved or surprisingly disappointed.

This plot point would have carried the same emotional impact as when it was revealed she was late to begin her period, and the subsequent days where she worried and physically reacted to the situation.

It’s understandable if anyone was a little lost, but the show ultimately gave us a truly beautiful love story.

The season began like a classic underdog story, reminiscent of Cinderella, but quickly developed its own unique direction within the world of Bridgerton. While it still included the familiar romantic tension of Bridgerton—the will-they-won’t-they dynamic—the couple’s journey felt different and exciting, often seeming genuinely hopeless. That is, until their seemingly impossible connection finally came to fruition.

Adding a baby to their relationship right now would have been overwhelming, so fans can expect to see their romance develop gradually, just like with Anthony and Kate, and Colin and Penelope before them.

Bridgerton seasons 1-4 are streaming on Netflix, along with Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
