WarGames matches don't need to happen every year

As a seasoned gamer of the squared circle, I’ve seen my fair share of WWE events and match stipulations come and go. The WarGames matches have been quite the spectacle since their debut on the main roster three years ago, but as someone who values variety and freshness in storytelling, I must admit that I’m starting to feel a bit worn out by them.

The WWE Survivor Series: WarGames event is approaching soon. This annual spectacle is one of the key events on the WWE calendar. The introduction of WarGames-style matches has certainly added an extra dimension to the event, but since the abandonment of “Brand Supremacy”, some fans are now suggesting that the WarGames matches have become repetitive and it might be time for a fresh approach at this year’s Pay-Per-View (PLE).

For this current season, it seems there will be two WarGames encounters scheduled. Roman Reigns is set to captain one incarnation of “The Bloodline,” while Solo Sikoa takes charge of his team within the steel cage. On the women’s front, Rhea Ripley and Liv Morgan will carry on their storyline with four associates each to complete their squads. As has been the case for all previous WarGames bouts, these matches promise excitement and moments worth discussing in the ensuing days. They will undoubtedly deliver “sports entertainment.” However, it’s understandable if fans might feel a bit weary of them year after year.

WarGames resembles the predicament that the Hell in a Cell stipulation once faced. Initially, it was an innovative match format intended to conclude feuds brutally, but over time, it devolved into a mere scheduling fixture. Matches were forcibly inserted into the cage, regardless of their hotness or quality. In the same vein, WarGames seems to be heading in this direction, only three years after being introduced onto the main roster. The Survivor Series, on the other hand, replaced its traditional brand supremacy defined by elimination-style matches with a strategy to compel these “teams” to participate in WarGames.

Consider if WWE were to occasionally introduce the WarGames match type throughout the year, varying the timing instead of having it annually in November. This would force the creative team to come up with innovative ways to develop storylines around these matches when needed. Taking breaks between such events could help keep them fresh and exciting. For instance, lumberjack matches, which are not as frequent as they once were, add an interesting twist to regular weekly or monthly bouts. Similarly, the WarGames match should have a similar impact on storylines, signifying that what’s happening is of great importance, rather than it just being a tradition.

The upcoming WWE Survivor Series: WarGames 2024 promises two thrilling, high-impact contests. After these exciting events pass, it might be worthwhile for WWE to reassess their approach in employing the WarGames stipulation in future matches.
