You won’t have to pay to watch the movie starring Viggo Mortensen – it’s coming to a streaming service for free!
Viggo Mortensen is famous for playing Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films (2001–2003), but he’s also worked with director David Cronenberg on movies like Eastern Promises (2007), earning an Academy Award nomination for his performance. He’s been nominated for an Oscar three times – for Eastern Promises, Captain Fantastic (2016), and Green Book (2018) – and one of his darker, post-apocalyptic films will soon be available to stream for free.
I’m so excited that The Road is finally going to be available to stream for free! It’s been almost twenty years since it came out in theaters, and it’s a film I’ve always loved. Directed by John Hillcoat and based on Cormac McCarthy’s incredible 2006 novel, it tells the story of a father, played brilliantly by Viggo Mortensen, and his son as they journey across a devastated America, desperately trying to reach the coast and find a safe haven. It’s a truly powerful and moving film.
The film The Road, originally released in theaters in 2009, will be available to stream on Tubi starting May 25th. You can currently watch it on Paramount+, Prime Video, and Howdy, or purchase it on Prime Video for as little as $12.99.
The film stars Viggo Mortensen, alongside Kodi Smit-McPhee (known for The Power of the Dog), Oscar winner Charlize Theron (Monster), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), and veteran actor Robert Duvall, who has received seven Oscar nominations. The cast also includes Emmy nominees Molly Parker (House of Cards) and the late Michael K. Williams, as well as Garret Dillahunt, Gina Preciado, and Mary Rawson.
Critics loved the film The Road, giving it a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They praised how well it captured the dark and serious tone of Cormac McCarthy’s original novel, though some might find it quite intense. The powerful performances by Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee were a major highlight. Viewers gave it a 68% rating.
Honestly, while The Road is a powerful film, it didn’t really connect with a wide audience. It only made around $27.6 million globally, which barely covered its $25 million production cost. Awards-wise, it was a bit of a disappointment too – a BAFTA nomination for the cinematography was a highlight, but it didn’t get the major recognition I thought it deserved.
The Road isn’t a horror movie, but it’s more frightening than most. The real threat isn’t the devastated world itself, but the desperate people who live in it. Despite the growing number of post-apocalyptic stories, The Road still stands out as a landmark film. It shows a world where simply staying alive isn’t enough, and even survivors don’t find happiness.
