Unraveling the Shocking Twists of Netflix’s Caught: Who’s Really Behind the Lies?

As a movie enthusiast, I recently discovered “Caught,” a gripping series adapted from Harlan Coben’s renowned novels, now streaming on Netflix. This captivating tale unfolds in the picturesque landscape of Bariloche, nestled within Argentina’s Patagonia.

In this Spanish-speaking production, we follow the footsteps of journalist Ema Garay (Soledad Villamil), who has built a reputation for unmasking criminals who have skillfully evaded the law’s grasp. When Ema embarks on an investigation into the disappearance of 16-year-old Martina Schulz, each clue she uncovers only deepens the enigma surrounding her case.

In the course of six gripping episodes, the series Caught leaves viewers guessing as Ema delves into various suspects. What makes this show intriguing is its ability to subvert expectations – a person whom Ema converses with isn’t at all who they appear to be, and while probing instances of child abuse, it is revealed that a young girl has vanished. The narrative, brimming with unexpected twists and turns, defies predictability and maintains an air of suspense right up until the climax.

Leo Mercer becomes the prime suspect

The movie “Caught” begins with Ema assuming a fake teenage persona online, engaging in a chat with an individual suspected of being a pedophile. This person manipulates underage victims by pretending to be a friend, persuading them to share explicit images or even arrange meetings, only to expose their real identity and exploit them later. Ema suspects that the person she is communicating with might have been involved in the assault of 16-year-old Camila Costa.

In the initial scenario, I, as a follower, found myself assisting Ema in her mission to expose the culprit. To draw him out, she cleverly orchestrated a rendezvous at Bariloche Park, enlisting the help of a 19-year-old jiu-jitsu prodigy as bait. After an agonizing wait, I observed Ema spotting a hooded individual clutching a teddy bear, keeping vigil over the young lady. In hot pursuit, she was unable to apprehend him, as he managed to evade capture. Hours after, within the virtual realm of our online game, the man expressed remorse and asserted that Ema was absent when he arrived. To avoid misunderstandings, she had signaled her presence with a fuchsia-hued backpack, while he promised to bring a gift. True to his word, he arranged another encounter to “make amends.” Despite the police’s reluctance due to unavailability of officers for the operation, Ema and our team bravely decided to proceed independently, opting for an isolated location known as the “house with the red door,” allowing us to maintain control over the situation and record the suspect.

To my surprise, it wasn’t Ema’s anticipated guest who arrived. Instead, I found myself face-to-face with Leo Mercer, the head of the Fronteras Foundation, known for its work empowering vulnerable children through education and projects. Upon his entrance into the house, Ema and I challenged him. “Are you here to exploit a child?” she inquired.

Previously, Ema encountered Leo at Camila’s residence, as Camila had been victimized by an online acquaintance who later sought to meet in person. Leo, a close family friend, was concerned that Ema might exploit Camila for monetary gain or sensational stories. However, upon learning about Ema’s profession as a journalist, he started to trust her more.

Ema shares a video online showing her arguing with Leo, which quickly becomes a popular topic. Leo’s reputation takes a hit as he’s labeled as an abuser and accused of assaulting Camila.

Unbeknownst to Ema, Leo was not guilty. His presence at the house during the sting operation was part of a broader scheme orchestrated by the man she had been communicating with. It’s disclosed in the show that Leo got ensnared in a trap intended to incriminate him for child abuse. In reality, he was at the house to assist Martina Schulz, who needed help and claimed to be there. Tragically, Martina disappears and is found dead in the forest a few days later, making people suspicious of Leo even more after Ema’s video spreads online. Facundo, Camila’s father, along with other town men, decided to confront Leo about these allegations.

In the closing moments of episode 2, Leo plans to discuss the recent events with Ema, away from any cameras or law enforcement. He confides in her that Martina contacted him for assistance. However, before they could meet, Facundo unexpectedly shows up and shoots Leo in the neck, resulting in him plunging into a nearby river.

Who is the real culprit?

In episode 6, we delve into past occurrences in the series ‘Caught’ that weren’t shown before. These flashbacks uncover Marcos Brown as the hidden mastermind behind the plot to harm Leo’s life. Marcos, a friend from childhood and once thought of as a brother by Leo, is the one. After being dismissed from his job in Buenos Aires due to allegedly being used as a scapegoat, Marcos harbored resentment towards Leo’s Fronteras Foundation because it now owned land that was once his family’s. The flashbacks depict Marcos repeatedly pressuring Leo to set up a trust fund for the land, promising him that Fran Briguel, a Bariloche businessman whose family owns half of the town, would be interested in the deal, leading to significant profits for both parties.

Later on, when Leo declines, Marcos recalls an old incident between them – a break-in at the Briguel household three decades ago. Marcos yearned to pilfer a badge he thought would prove Fran’s kin were of Nazi descent, hoping it would help his dad in a property dispute with them. Unfortunately, the supposed badge turned out to be a myth. As they attempted to depart, they shattered the living room chandelier to avoid detection. Pieces of glass struck Margarita, their household employee who was still inside, causing her to bleed and fall to the floor. Despite this, Leo managed to flee while Marcos got caught. With Margarita grasping his leg, the Briguel family returned home, leading to Marcos’s arrest. To dodge legal ramifications, Marcos’s father was compelled to part ways with the land.

Marcos, who had been dreaming about regaining a specific piece of property for some time, arranged a conversation with Fran about setting up a trust fund for that land belonging to the foundation, without informing Leo. During this private flight to discuss business, both Marcos and Martina Schulz were traveling together to Buenos Aires, as they were also scheduled to meet Fran there.

After Martina, an accomplished violinist, began sharing increasingly suggestive videos online, she attracted a number of followers, among them Fran. Intrigued, Fran invited Martina to Buenos Aires to record a video for him in a hotel room. According to their deal, Fran would observe the recording and in return, he would attend one of her violin performances. However, Fran breached this agreement by attempting to inappropriately touch Martina. Seeking assistance, Fran asked Marcos, who was also staying at the same hotel, to console Martina and escort her elsewhere. In her hotel room, Martina confided in Marcos about the incident and requested his help in going to a police station. Despite warning her that Fran was influential, he advised her against reporting it.

Afterward, Marcos escorted Martina on a bus journey back to Bariloche. At the station, it dawned on her that she was familiar with him due to Leo. It turned out that she resided beside Leo’s former partner, Juliana, and was acquainted with him.

Martina shared a plan with Marcos on how they might reclaim their family property: he devised a scheme to falsely accuse Leo. Later, in another scene, armed with a laptop, Marcos anonymously emailed Ema, pretending to be a minor victim of abuse she had experienced, and even providing the abuser’s online username used to target victims. This email led Ema to investigate this supposed criminal, suspecting it might connect to other instances of exploited young women. Unbeknownst to her, however, she was being drawn into Marcos’s trap for Leo’s sake.

In the final installment, we learn how Leo came to be at the “red door house” while Ema and her journalist colleagues were present. Upon their return to Bariloche, Marcos and Martina maintained contact and frequently met up. While the series doesn’t depict any overt scenes of them engaging in an intimate relationship, it suggests that there was something deeper between them. For instance, Marcos asks Martina if she’s been “acting up,” to which she replies, “Are you trying to boss me around?

To Martina, Marcos seemed extraordinary, yet to Marcos, the young lady was merely a pawn in his grand scheme. Deceiving Martina, he concocted a false request that required her to contact Leo for assistance. This allowed him to proceed to the house where Ema lay in wait to confront the supposed culprit.

When Leo gets a phone call, he’s sitting at a restaurant previously shared with his ex-girlfriend Juliana, where they had a long-term relationship and co-raised her son Armando for nearly a decade. Stepping outside to answer, he asks Martina if she wants him to contact the police, but she refuses. Upon reaching the specified location, he notices that the messages from Martina detailing the address are being erased, one by one. Suddenly, Ema emerges, accusing Leo of intending to harm a minor, which he denies. Simultaneously, Marcos is at Leo’s residence, planting fake evidence such as his laptop used in communicating with the alleged minor (who was actually Ema), images of minors, and a teddy bear resembling the one Ema had seen held by the hooded man in Bariloche park.

The truth about Marcos

In their meeting with Marcos, Ema learns the truth about him. Prior to her encounter with Leo before his shooting incident, she wholeheartedly trusted his claim of innocence and pursued further investigation. Ultimately, she suspects that Fran may have orchestrated events to acquire the foundation’s land at a low cost.

As a cinephile, I find myself at the tranquil lake where Leo once taught rowing to the children of the foundation – a place now holding memories tainted by suspicious circumstances. Here, I cross paths with Marcos, who I appeal to for aid in exposing Fran. However, our discussion is abruptly halted as Vicky, my coworker, calls me away from the scene. She informs me that Marcos, a con artist, has been apprehended in Buenos Aires, shedding light on his reappearance in Bariloche. Additionally, she shares some startling news: the foundation’s land will no longer be auctioned off but returned to its rightful owners, the Brown family, with Marcos Brown being the sole living heir.

Using her phone as a recorder, Ema pressures Marcos to answer her questions. She explains that after swindling his old firm, Marcos was left with nothing and needed to reclaim family land. To do this, he had to frame Leo for a crime, undermine the foundation, and involve both Ema and Martina in his scheme. When she asks if he murdered Martina, Marcos denies being a murderer before striking Ema on the head with an oar.

As Ema awakens, she discerns that Marcos is attempting to drown her in the lake, all while laying blame for every event at her feet. In a desperate move, Ema fends him off by striking him on the head with a stone. With newfound determination, she then makes her way to her phone and initiates a live broadcast on social media, disclosing the entire ordeal.

As a movie lover, I find myself in an uncomfortable situation. On the highway, I’m compelled to reach out to my wife, explaining a mix-up and warning her that falsehoods might be spread about me, but assuring her nothing actually transpired. I beg her to disconnect after our conversation ends, and once we do, I release my safety belt and guide my car towards a truck loaded with timber, ending my journey prematurely. This drastic move was meant to dodge the accusations looming over me—only this time, those accusations were sadly accurate.

As the case nears its conclusion, Ema and Vicky discuss gathering proof against Fran, who is accused of abusing minors. The series doesn’t reveal how the investigation will unfold, but it does disclose who assaulted Camila and other minors. In Neuquén, a 38-year-old man named Fabián Ramos was apprehended while attempting to rape a woman in a hotel. She successfully fled from the room and shouted for help in the hallway, causing guests to exit their rooms and pursue the attacker, who attempted to barricade himself in a room. Upon reaching the police station, he was recognized by all the victims.

What happened to Martina?

In Episode 6 of Caught, we discover the truth about Martina, who many believed had been abducted by Leo. While examining a photograph of Martina with a friend, taken at an underground gathering, Ema spots a red dot on Martina’s forehead – a mark she also saw in another photo, but this one was snapped at a different venue. Curiously, Ema tracks down the photo at the memorial school held following Martina’s body discovery, and notices the artwork adorning the wall in the background of the image.

It becomes clear to Ema that the sketches were made by Juliana’s son, Armando, and she recognized them during her visit to the woman’s restaurant for further investigation details. Ema then goes to Armando’s house to speak with him, navigating through their home until she discovers a wall adorned with Armando’s drawings—the same wall featured in Martina’s photograph. In essence, Armando, who was also present at the secret party organized by youth from Bariloche, was with Martina following the event. The authorities and Ema have previously known that Martina had been abducted from the party by an unknown individual, as a video documented that instance. However, what we now learn is that Armando was indeed the unidentified person in question.

It turns out that Armando and Martina departed from the party together and headed to his residence, where they shared memories of their childhood as neighbors. Martina grabbed his Polaroid camera to capture a moment, which later leads Ema to find a certain photo. Afterwards, they engaged in an intimate encounter. While Martina was dressing up afterwards, she stumbled upon a video on his phone showing Ema confronting Leo.

With Armando still asleep, Martina used a different phone provided by Marcos to contact him for an explanation. However, he asked her not to worry and to discard the phone he had given her. In response, Martina destroyed the phone by breaking it and flushing it down the toilet. Meanwhile, Armando was knocking on the door and discovered the situation when he saw Leo’s face on Martina’s other phone.

In a heated exchange, Martina, who has been accusing Marcos of lying about something, finds herself backed up against Armando’s door, which is located near the staircase. As they continue to argue, Armando, questioning Leo’s actions towards Martina, attempts to move her away from him, unintentionally causing her to tumble down the stairs, resulting in Martina’s tragic death.

In a necessary bid to safeguard her son Armando, Juliana acted accordingly as his mother when she found Martina lying at the foot of the stairs, with Armando cradling her while tears flowed. “There was no hope for Martina,” Juliana tells Ema upon their arrival home. They placed Martina’s body in the car and abandoned it in the woods, but upon returning home, they noticed Martina’s phone still inside. In a surprising move to hide evidence, Juliana decided to conceal the device among her ex-boyfriend Leo’s belongings. When she discovered that Facundo was responsible for Leo’s death, and the location where it occurred, she recalled that Leo used to camp near there. As Leo was being pursued due to pedophilia allegations, he had hidden close to a waterfall – the very spot Juliana found his things. With Leo deceased, they thought it acceptable to place Martina’s phone with his possessions, didn’t they? In the end, Armando decides to reveal their secret and together with his mother, they drive in Ema’s car to the police station to confess and face punishment for their actions.

How does Caught end?

Ema paid a visit to Facundo, who was involved in the shooting incident with Leo. She shared that her lawyer successfully changed the charge from murder to attempted murder. Ema suggested her account of the events might have played a role in this change, but she’s uncertain. However, what bothers her most is the fact that Leo’s body remains missing. In response to her concern, Facundo suggested she ask the police about it. Ema did, yet the police explained that the river likely carried Leo’s body to the lake, making it difficult to locate. They added that underwater pressure prevents the body from floating due to lack of oxygen. “The experts say so,” Ema said, “but I went there myself. Before reaching the lake, the river bends. If someone got dragged there, they could easily escape into the woods. Leo was very familiar with that place, just like Facundo.

The reporter is curious if Leo is still alive and thinks that Facundo may know more than he’s revealing. However, Facundo asserts that if Leo were alive and wished to return, he would do so. “I know Leo,” Facundo says, “and he can forgive anything. If he’s alive, he’ll come back. But if he’s not, we both have to accept it.” The series delves into the impact of false information and rumors that can lead people astray, as depicted in the story since we now live in a digital era where unverified information frequently spreads rapidly. Caught demonstrates how quick judgments and the rapid dissemination of content can ruin reputations without solid evidence. The narrative keeps viewers guessing about the boundaries of justice and its potential manipulation.

In a satisfying resolution, the story of “Caught” offers hope to both viewers and characters: the perpetrator is in custody, the Fronteras Foundation continues its vital work for children, the truth about Martina and Marcos Brown’s misdeeds has come to light, and remarkably, Leo lives on. Indeed, justice prevails.

Towards the end of the series, an individual on horseback rides into view from behind, set against the backdrop of a desert and mountains. As the camera shifts focus, it becomes clear that Leo is not alone but joined by five others, all astride their horses. A woman voice breaks the silence, expressing her boredom with the scenery, followed by a man’s suggestion for more companionship, which prompts Leo to smile. With this, Leo suggests they depart, and he sets off with his newly formed group.

Facundo believes that if Leo were still alive and so inclined, he would have come back, ever-forgiving of others. However, it seems this time around, Leo might not be interested in all that. Leo’s reputation was tarnished by falsehoods, and he was fatally wounded by a friend. As such, perhaps he now desires a straightforward life with his new companions and their horses – a life free from the deceit that can lead to the downfall of innocent souls.
