The popular BBC comedy Ghosts ended its television run in 2023, but good news for fans – the story isn’t over! Lionsgate UK announced a movie was being made back in February, and now we know when it’s coming out – just in time for Halloween!
The movie Ghosts: The Possession of Button House will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on Friday, October 23rd.
Although the story details are still secret, filming has begun. The production is back at West Horsley Place – the actual manor used as Button House in the show – and filming is also taking place at other locations throughout southeastern England.

Moving from television to the big screen is a major achievement for the show, which finished its five seasons on BBC One as the most popular comedy in the UK last year. The final episode attracted an impressive 7.2 million viewers, demonstrating that audiences still love Alison, Mike, and their unusual ghostly roommates.
Alison Owen and Debra Hayward, the producers behind the hit TV show Ghosts, are excited to bring the story to the big screen. They promise a larger-than-life cinematic experience that will do the characters justice. “We’re thrilled audiences will finally get to see Ghosts on the big screen after its success as a TV series,” they said. “It’s going to be an event you won’t want to miss.”

The writing team – Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, and Ben Willbond – are not only responsible for the script but will also oversee the show as executive producers, promising to maintain their well-known comedic style. They’ll be acting alongside Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe, who reprise their leading roles, and Lolly Adefope will be back as part of the cast.
Marie-Claire Benson, a senior executive at Lionsgate UK, highlighted the film’s appeal as a fun Halloween activity for families. She said the studio is thrilled to offer a shared experience for families this Halloween, and that seeing beloved ghost characters in theaters is a perfect way to celebrate the holiday.
The project is being expertly directed by Simon Hynd. With the American version renewed for a sixth season and international versions popular in France, Germany, and Australia, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding Ghosts.
Ghosts: The Possession of Button House is out in UK and Irish cinemas on 23 October 2026.
