Summary

  • Cameras roll on Shadow Man: Inside The Secret World of Larry Gagosian, an unauthorized documentary on the New York mega-dealer
  • Directed Barry Avrich, little is known about the project so far save from interviews with former employees and artists
  • Gagosian’s team was allegedly unaware of the project when Page Six broke the news

A new documentary by director Barry Avrich unexpectedly focuses on Larry Gagosian, the powerful New York art dealer.

According to initial reports from Page Six, many former employees and artists are coming forward with stories about Larry Gagosian and the inner workings of his gallery. The film, Shadow Man: Inside The Secret World of Larry Gagosian, was later officially confirmed by the filmmakers to ARTnews after rumors began circulating.

Larry Gagosian opened his first art gallery in Los Angeles in 1980, and has since expanded to 17 locations worldwide. Gagosian is a leading name in contemporary art, representing a prestigious group of over 112 artists, including renowned figures like Ed Ruscha, Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, Tyler Mitchell, and Takashi Murakami. Galleries are located in major cities such as New York, Paris, Hong Kong, London, Basel, Athens, and many other international hubs.

According to a lengthy 2023 profile in The New Yorker, the art dealer has become incredibly successful selling to influential and wealthy people, to the point where he’s now considered one of them. While most Americans might not know the name Gagosian, he’s highly respected among the famous and, especially, the extremely rich.

This new Gagosian documentary marks the third time filmmaker Avrich has explored the art world, following his previous films Made You Look: A True Story About Fake Art (2020) and Blurred Lines: Inside the Art World (2017). Blurred Lines offered a revealing look at the high-stakes contemporary art scene, featuring prominent artists like Marina Abramović, Damien Hirst, and Rashid Johnson, and examining the tension between artistic vision and commercial interests.
