The famous 1990s band Wilson Phillips got back together for a rare reunion over the weekend.
The band consists of Chynna Phillips, Wendy Wilson and Carnie Wilson.
Wendy and Carnie are related to The Beach Boys and Chynna is linked to The Mamas & The Papas.
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this! I just saw the pictures from the Aspen Snow Ball Gala – the one for the Children’s Oncology Support Fund at The St. Regis Aspen Resort on March 21st – and THEY were there, side-by-side! I’m still freaking out, honestly. It’s a dream come true to see them together, supporting such an amazing cause!
The three singers also performed some of their greatest hits.
The group quickly became popular in the early 1990s, releasing several hit songs like “Hold On, Release Me” and “You’re in Love.”
Following Brian Wilson’s passing, details about his complicated relationship with his daughters have come to light.
I was absolutely heartbroken when I heard about Brian Wilson. It was announced in June that he’d passed away at 82, and honestly, it just felt like losing a piece of my childhood. He’d been struggling with dementia for so long, and while it’s a relief he’s no longer suffering, it’s still just…devastating. He was a genius, and his music meant everything to me.
He and his first wife, Marilyn Wilson – a singer in the 1960s group The Honeys – had two daughters, Carnie and Wendy Wilson.
Carnie and Wendy’s parents separated in 1979 after a difficult marriage, complicated by their father Brian’s battles with addiction and mental health issues.
He also had a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder.
After the relationship ended, the musician and his daughters grew apart, having very little contact during their childhood and teenage years.
Brian remarried in 1995, wedding Melinda Ledbetter.
Together they adopted five children – Dakota Rose, Daria Rose, Delanie Rose, Dylan and Dash.
Carnie and Wendy Wilson formed the popular music group Wilson Phillips in 1989, while their younger siblings generally stayed out of the public eye.
Their band mate is Chynna, daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas.
Despite their fame, Carnie and Wendy’s personal relationship with their father remained strained.
In a 1992 interview with the Los Angeles Times, as reported by the Daily Mail, Carnie explained that they had no contact with the person in question. She said they were hesitant to reach out, fearing an awkward interaction and not knowing what to say.
In that same year, the sisters explored their complicated relationship in a song called “Flesh and Blood,” which appeared on Wilson Phillips’ second album, Shadows and Light.
The song was written as an emotional outreach to their father.
The song featured lyrics like: ‘If you stay hidden away, you’ll never improve… I’ve been watching you for years, and it’s the only time I ever see you.’
Carnie shared with the Los Angeles Times that she wasn’t sure how Brian would react to the song, saying he’d likely either be very upset and cry, or become angry and distant.
It was wonderful when Brian and his daughters started to reconnect in 1994. We, as fans, had been hoping for years to see them come back together, and it meant so much after such a long period of very little contact. It felt like a true healing process was beginning.
Carnie told People magazine that she and Wendy were recording demo tapes for their first album as a pair, and she was hoping their father would contribute backing vocals. She expressed confidence that they would all collaborate together eventually.
The connection strengthened in later years, particularly through music.
Carnie also told UsWeekly in 2024 Brian had become one of Wilson Phillips’ biggest supporters.
She said: ‘He also loves Wilson Phillips. He really does.
My dad keeps asking how Wilson Phillips is doing. I always tell him we’re doing well. He’s a funny guy, and I know he’s really proud of us.
Despite receiving a diagnosis of a brain condition like dementia, Brian still found ways to enjoy music with his daughters.
Carnie told UsWeekly: ‘We love to sing Surfer Girl and In My Room.
‘Sometimes a little California Girls, (which is) his favourite, and sometimes we do Be My Baby.’
I’ve been a fan of the Wilson sisters for years, and it’s always been interesting to me how they initially built their careers separately from their dad. But honestly, when they finally started making music with him, it felt like everything clicked. It was a real turning point for their sound, and a beautiful way to blend their talents.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Carnie explained that they intentionally downplayed their family connections, stating, ‘We didn’t want anyone to assume our success was due to them, because it wasn’t.’
