As a long-time gamer and avid Twitch viewer, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions about the recent news that former President Donald Trump’s account has been reinstated on the platform. On one hand, I believe in free speech and the value of hearing directly from political figures, especially during election seasons. However, my experiences with online communities have taught me that such freedoms come with great responsibility.
Twitch, the widely used livestreaming service, has once again made active the account linked to former President Donald Trump. This action comes nearly four years after the platform suspended the channel following the violent intrusion at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
On Friday, following Trump’s acceptance of the Republican nomination for the 2024 US presidency, Twitch lifted its ban on his account. A representative from Twitch made this confirmation to TopMob on Monday, explaining, “We recognize the significance of presidential nominees communicating directly with their audiences when feasible. Trump is now officially the Republican candidate for US president.”
Twitch will persist in enforcing its rules for conduct and monitoring the chat room.
The spokesperson reiterated that we strictly adhere to our Community Guidelines and take proper measures when breaches are detected. Twitch does not distinguish between channels based on their owners being public figures or not; all are held accountable under our equal guidelines.
Trump established his Twitch account in October 2019, as evidenced by Twitch Tracker. As of now, over 143,000 users follow this channel. Trump’s team employs it to broadcast live events and rallies, such as the recent rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which was streamed on the platform.
