Well, it seems that the fine folks in the US House of Representatives have decided to don their detective hats and call upon the Justice Department to investigate none other than Donald Trump’s extravagant dinner for his memecoin investors on the 22nd of May. They’re all a-flutter about “foreign influence over US policy decisions” and “potential corruption and emoluments clause violations.” Oh, the drama! 🎭
In a letter penned on the very same day, 35 House members beseeched the acting chief of the public integrity section, Edward Sullivan, to launch an inquiry into this memecoin soirée. They’re itching to find out if it violated the federal bribery statute or the foreign emoluments clause of the good ol’ US Constitution. Because, you know, nothing says “integrity” like a dinner party with crypto millionaires! 🍽️💸
Now, under the emoluments clause, our dear president is not allowed to accept gifts from foreign states without Congress giving a hearty thumbs-up. Bloomberg, that ever-watchful hawk, reported that a good number of the dinner guests were likely foreign nationals, thanks to their cozy connections with crypto exchanges. Fancy that! 🌍
“US law prohibits foreign persons from contributing to US political campaigns,” the letter declared with all the seriousness of a cat in a dog show. “However, the $TRUMP memecoin, with its tantalizing promise of exclusive access to the President, opens the door for foreign governments to buy influence, all while keeping their identities as secret as a magician’s tricks.” 🐇🎩
Now, just hours before this grand feast, the call for an investigation and a press conference demanding Trump to “release the guest list” took place. This shindig was held at the Trump National Golf Club, just outside Washington, DC. A merry band of protesters, led by Senator Jeff Merkley, gathered outside waving signs that read “illegal crypto party” and “democracy is not for sale.” Oh, the irony! 🥳
Some of the dinner guests, perhaps feeling a tad guilty, donned masks to hide their identities. But fear not! The ever-curious media and protesters confirmed that none other than Tron founder Justin Sun was in attendance, along with other Trump supporters who couldn’t resist posting their escapades on social media. The complete guest list, however, remains as elusive as a good cup of coffee at a bad diner. ☕️
The memecoin dinner still has the potential to affect pending legislation in Congress
In addition to the call for a DOJ investigation, Democratic lawmakers in both the House and Senate have proposed legislation to tackle what they’ve dubbed “Trump’s crypto corruption.” Meanwhile, Congress is busy considering a bill to regulate stablecoins and a market structure bill. Because, why not throw a little more chaos into the mix? 🤷♂️
Several Senate Democrats, who initially turned their noses up at the stablecoin bill, known as the GENIUS Act, later decided to play nice with the Republicans to set up a debate. Isn’t politics just a delightful game? 🎲
Representative Maxine Waters has introduced a bill to limit the access of any US president, vice president, members of Congress, and their families to cryptocurrencies. And let’s not forget, members of the Senate are also planning to propose an amendment to the GENIUS Act to address Trump’s ties to World Liberty Financial, a crypto platform backed by the president’s family that issued its USD1 stablecoin. Because nothing says “trustworthy” like family ties in the world of crypto! 🏦
