Well, folks, it seems that President Trump has decided to sprinkle a little fairy dust on the world of cryptocurrency by granting pardons to three co-founders of BitMEX. Yes, you heard that right! It’s like giving a gold star to the kid who just set the school on fire. 🎉
Meet the trio: Benjamin Delo, Samuel Reed, and Arthur Hayes. These gentlemen had already confessed to a few minor infractions—like money laundering and, oh, I don’t know, running a platform that was basically a “money laundering exchange.” You know, just your average Tuesday in the crypto world. 🙄
Despite their best efforts to convince everyone that they were not, in fact, operating a shady operation, prosecutors were having none of it. They charged the trio with deceiving authorities while continuing to serve American users like a bad waiter who keeps forgetting your drink order. 🍹
In 2022, Hayes and Delo admitted to not having an Anti-Money Laundering (AML) program. I mean, who needs one of those when you can just wing it, right? They were sentenced to probation—Delo for 30 months and Hayes for six months of home confinement. Talk about a vacation! 🏖️
Reed, the former chief technology officer, got off with just 18 months of probation and a $10 million fine. I guess that’s what happens when you’re the tech guy in a room full of financial wizards. BitMEX itself was slapped with a $100 million fine, which is like getting a parking ticket for a Ferrari. 💸
And just when you thought it couldn’t get any weirder, Trump also pardoned Trevor Milton, the ex-CEO of Nikola, who was convicted of securities fraud. Milton had been sentenced to four years in prison but was still out on appeal, probably trying to convince the world that his electric truck could actually drive itself. 🚗⚡
So, there you have it! A little bit of pardoning here, a sprinkle of fraud there, and we’re all left wondering if we’re living in a reality show or just a really bad episode of “The Twilight Zone.”
