The director of the hit zombie film Train to Busan is back with a new horror movie, and a thrilling teaser trailer has just been released. Yeon Sang-ho became well-known for his work in the genre with Train to Busan, which was praised for its intense story about survival during a zombie outbreak and earned a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. After trying out different genres with films like Psychokinesis and revisiting the world of Train to Busan with the spin-off Peninsula, Yeon is now aiming to scare audiences once again with his latest film, Colony.
The new film, Colony (also called Gunche in South Korea), brings together director Yeon Sang-ho with actors he’s worked with before. This includes Koo Kyo-hwan (from Peninsula) and Kim Shin-rock (Hellbound), as well as Shin Hyun-been, who appeared in his upcoming film The Ugly. However, the movie is headlined by Gianna Jun (Blood: The Last Vampire), who plays the main character amidst a chaotic situation.
The movie Colony centers around Professor Se Jeong (Jun) who attends a biotechnology conference. What starts as a typical industry event quickly descends into chaos when a zombie virus breaks out. The building is immediately quarantined, trapping everyone inside – infected or not. As survival becomes a struggle, the virus begins to evolve, creating terrifying mutations that promise a fresh take on the zombie genre. A trailer released by Well Go USA Entertainment shows the film’s gripping premise and a horrifying infection, and the tagline suggests a complex story about both the virus and the people caught in the crisis.
“As the virus spreads, the order begins to mutate.”
The film Colony will debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May as part of the Midnight Screenings. The trailer suggests it will be visually striking and genuinely thrilling. Director Yeon Sang-ho is known for his work with zombies, including the acclaimed animated film Train to Busan and its connected story, Seoul Station, which received a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. Although his film Peninsula, set in the same universe as Train to Busan, received mixed reviews from critics, audiences generally enjoyed it.
Despite some initial confusion, Colony is a completely new zombie story and isn’t connected to the Train to Busan films. The movie is set to be released in theaters on August 26th, offering a thrilling horror experience for fans of international cinema. While reviews are still emerging, the director’s previous work suggests this film could be something special for genre enthusiasts. More information about Colony‘s release will be available after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and first reactions are expected soon.
