Toy Story 5 Officially Revives A Devastating Jessie Storyline

Toy Story 5 is bringing back a devastating storyline for Jessie (Joan Cusack).

A particularly heartbreaking moment in the Toy Story series happens in the second film when we learn about Jessie’s past. She was left behind by her original owner, Emily, and spent years wishing someone would play with her again, but instead, she was given away. Thankfully, Jessie eventually finds happiness and a sense of belonging with her new friends and through being loved by Andy (John Morris) and Bonnie (Scarlett Spears).

A preview in Entertainment Weekly reveals that Jessie will revisit Emily’s house in Toy Story 5. However, Emily no longer lives there; a new child named Blaze does. Mykal-Michelle Harris, who voices Blaze, describes her as a spirited and energetic horse lover. Blaze grew up on a ranch with her family and is confident and true to herself. She’s an older child who still enjoys playing with toys, especially horse figurines – it’s a big part of who she is.

Blaze owns a horse named Daffodil and a pig named Jimmy Dean. A picture shows Jessie riding Daffodil with her horse, Bullseye. Jessie is beaming, but Bullseye looks surprised! Jessie ended up on Daffodil after a plan to help Bonnie make friends didn’t quite work, but she seems perfectly happy about it.

While at the farm, Jessie encounters a group of older toys who feel a bit behind the times compared to Bonnie’s new tablet, Lilypad. These toys include Smarty Pants, designed to help with potty training; Atlas, a GPS tracker; and Snappy, a digital camera. Conan O’Brien, who voices Smarty Pants, imagined the farm as a Wild West setting, with Smarty Pants as the town drunk and Jessie playing the cowgirl. You can see pictures of Jessie and Bullseye riding Daffodil, Jessie meeting the toys, and Blaze below.

Jessie, Bullseye, and the farm animals – plus a mischievous pony named Blaze and a whole lot of new toys – will keep Jessie busy as she tries to find her way back to Bonnie. Even with everything happening, Jessie will likely be reminded of her past with Emily, both the happy times and the sadness of being left behind, and how those memories connect to the farm toys and what they teach her about technology’s effect on children.

It doesn’t look like Emily will be in Toy Story 5, although the house she used to live in will be featured. For Emily to return to her childhood home after so many years, the story would need a good reason. If she does return, it could create a very emotional and satisfying moment for Jessie.

A popular theory, circulating for 27 years, suggests that Andy’s mom from Toy Story is actually the grown-up version of Emily, the girl who originally owned Woody. The upcoming sequel might finally prove or disprove this idea. If true, it would be a huge surprise for viewers, and especially for Jessie, who unknowingly shared a home with Andy’s mother for years.

Whether this idea or the grown-up version of Emily appears in Toy Story 5, bringing back this significant part of Jessie’s story after so many sequels is unexpected. It also suggests that other beloved characters and plot points from the original Toy Story movies could reappear in future installments.
