Tom Cruise’s “Unrecognizable” New Movie Role Can Finally Redeem His ‘Rain Man’ Snub

I playfully asked my nephew if he recognized the name Thomas Mapother IV. He replied that he wasn’t very knowledgeable about history. You can imagine his surprise when I told him that’s actually Tom Cruise’s birth name! He’s a huge fan of the actor, but he honestly thought I was referring to a Scottish king from the 1800s. It just goes to show you can be surprised by facts about Tom Cruise – and even by the roles he takes on. He’s currently filming a new movie called Digger, and he’s almost unrecognizable in it.

At CinemaCon on Tuesday, April 14, Warner Bros. offered a first look at the upcoming comedy directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The teaser revealed Tom Cruise’s transformation into his character, Digger Rockwell, showing him with gray, thinning hair and a wrinkled appearance. Cruise and Iñárritu were both present to share the clip, which previews a film described as a darkly humorous and satirical comedy. The movie is scheduled to be released on October 2, 2026.

What Is ‘Digger’ About?

I just heard about this new Tom Cruise movie, Digger, and it sounds wild! Apparently, it cost a whopping $125 million to make. He’s playing this really out-there oil tycoon – think Southern drawl and a bit of a belly! From what I gather, the story revolves around him trying to convince everyone he’s actually a hero. The ironic part? His own company causes some major environmental damage, so he’s basically on a desperate mission to repair his image – and his fortune, of course. Sounds like it’s going to be a really funny ride!

Alejandro G. Iñárritu is returning to English-language filmmaking with a new project, his first since The Revenant. The film was approved by Warner Bros. leaders Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy as part of their plan to support films by acclaimed directors, building on the success of Sinners and another film expected in 2025. This project also fits with Tom Cruise’s recent deal with Warner Bros. after his departure from Paramount.

Given all the current discussion about oil, the new film Digger is perfectly timed. Let’s hope it doesn’t avoid difficult subjects. During the film’s announcement, Tom Cruise described the comedy, directed by the filmmaker behind The Revenant, as “wild, funny, and something I can’t wait for audiences to see.” Director Iñárritu also seemed excited, saying he wasn’t prepared for how Tom Cruise transformed into Digger Rockwell and that this role represents a new kind of fearlessness for Cruise, potentially being his most demanding performance yet.

Could Tom Cruise Finally Win an Oscar for ‘Digger’?

It’s surprising that some incredibly talented actors haven’t received an Oscar, and Tom Cruise is a prime example. While the Academy recently honored him with a special award at the Governors Awards on November 16, 2025, it doesn’t quite address the fact that he’s never won a competitive Oscar. He’s been nominated for Best Actor for films like Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, and for Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia. He also received a nomination as a producer for Top Gun: Maverick. Many people feel he deserves a win.

There’s widespread agreement that Tom Cruise was overlooked for an award for his performance in Rain Man nearly four decades ago. He delivered a strong performance as Charlie Babbitt, a harsh and self-centered businessman, who is devastated to learn his father’s fortune went to his autistic brother, Raymond. While Dustin Hoffman won Best Actor for his portrayal of Raymond, many believe Cruise gave the better performance, and that Hoffman’s award was more about the character itself than his acting.

As a huge movie fan, I’m really hoping Tom Cruise gets some recognition for his work in Digger. But honestly, I’m a little worried he might end up like Dustin Hoffman in Wag the Dog – overshadowed by an incredibly talented supporting cast. Jesse Plemons is always fantastic and tends to steal every scene he’s in, and then you’ve got John Goodman as the President – he’s a powerhouse! Plus, Riz Ahmed is amazing too. It’s a great cast, but I’m wondering if they might end up outshining even Tom Cruise.

While Tom Cruise isn’t involved in The Odyssey, he’s likely hoping Matt Damon receives less awards attention. Working with director Christopher Nolan often increases Oscar chances, but Cruise seems determined to prove he’s more than just an action hero by taking on this role. We wish him the best and hope he finally wins an Oscar.
