Before Alan Ritchson’s popular portrayal of Jack Reacher on Prime Video, Hollywood tried—and failed—to make successful movies based on Lee Child’s novels. Despite featuring Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie, the two films, Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, didn’t capture the spirit of the character like the new series has. Now, 14 years later, those films are being given a second chance through free streaming.
The movie Jack Reacher is now available to stream for free on Pluto TV. It’s expected to stay there until the end of April. Pluto TV, like other free streaming services, usually only has movies available for a month at a time. If you’re a fan of the Jack Reacher stories – including the Prime Video series starring Alan Ritchson – you should watch it soon!
The 2012 film Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise, presented a different take on the character than the one found in Lee Child’s books and portrayed by Alan Ritchson in the recent series. In the movie, Reacher—originally a military police officer in the novels—is instead a homicide detective who investigates a mass shooting. This leads him into a perilous situation involving a skilled sniper and a shadowy mastermind. While the film was a reasonably good action thriller on its own, it significantly deviated from the source material and Ritchson’s interpretation of the character.
What Went Wrong With ‘Jack Reacher’?
Despite what some might think, Jack Reacher was actually a pretty successful movie. Critics generally liked it, giving it a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences enjoyed it even more, with a 67% score based on over 100,000 reviews. It also did well financially, earning $218 million globally on a $60 million budget.
The Jack Reacher movies don’t really capture the spirit of Lee Child’s books. While Tom Cruise is a fantastic action star, he wasn’t quite right for the role. The first film felt more like a typical Tom Cruise thriller with the Jack Reacher name attached, rather than a faithful adaptation of the novels. As a result, the sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, didn’t do well. Both critics and audiences disliked it – it received a 37% rating from critics and a 42% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. With a worldwide gross of only $162 million, the film was considered a financial disappointment, and it’s unlikely we’ll ever see a third movie.
Alan Ritchson Is the Perfect Jack Reacher

As a huge fan of the Jack Reacher books, I was so thrilled when the Prime Video series came out in 2022. It really felt like they got the character, staying pretty true to Lee Child’s novels – each season tackles a different book. But the best part? Alan Ritchson is just perfect as Reacher. The books always emphasized how physically imposing Reacher is, and Ritchson genuinely is that character – you need someone that size to make it believable! Sadly, we’re going to have to wait until 2026 for Season 4, but I’m already counting down the days.
