This marks a major achievement for the streaming service and could potentially lead to a new sequel being developed faster.
According to FlixPatrol, Top Gun: Maverick has been among the top ten most-streamed movies in the U.S. on Paramount+ for an impressive 600 days. Currently, it’s ranked number two, just behind Primate, and is performing better than other films in its genre, including The Running Man, which stars Glen Powell – also a cast member in Top Gun: Maverick.
What Is Top Gun: Maverick All About?
Released in 2022, Top Gun: Maverick is the sequel to the 1986 classic Top Gun. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie, the film stars Tom Cruise reprising his role as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. He’s called back to train a new group of Top Gun pilots for a challenging and perilous mission.
Joining Tom Cruise in the movie are Miles Teller, playing the son of Anthony Edwards’ Goose, along with Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Jennifer Connelly, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris. Top Gun: Maverick also includes a final on-screen performance by the late Val Kilmer, who returns as Iceman from the original 1986 film.
Released in 2022, Top Gun: Maverick was a huge success with both critics and audiences. It earned over $1.496 billion at the box office on a budget of approximately $177 million. The film received widespread praise and currently holds a 96% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on almost 500 reviews from verified critics.
When Can Fans Expect Another Top Gun Movie?
There’s been a lot of talk about a new Top Gun movie, but details have been scarce. However, a project is definitely underway, though a release date is still unknown. Following the success of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, a sequel was quickly confirmed.
As of June 2025, Ehren Kruger is currently writing the script. It’s a large-scale project I’ve been developing for nearly a year, collaborating with contacts at the Navy and Lockheed Martin. Kruger is enthusiastic about it, so we’re hopeful about how it will turn out.
Kosinski explained that developing the next film was about finding a fresh, challenging idea—one that truly expands the story and is impossible to ignore. He’s particularly excited by how ambitious the concept is.
Top Gun: Maverick is currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
