Tom Cruise reportedly to end Paris Olympics with epic stunt to pass the torch to L.A.
As a seasoned movie buff with a soft spot for heart-stopping stunts and edge-of-your-seat action sequences, I must say that the news of Tom Cruise‘s planned epic stunt at the Olympic closing ceremony has me absolutely thrilled! With his unparalleled dedication to pushing the boundaries of what is physically possible, it seems only fitting that he’d bring a touch of Hollywood magic to the grand finale of the Paris 2024 Games.
For the Olympic closing ceremony, Tom Cruise plans to adopt some strategies from his “Mission: Impossible” movies.
According to reports, the 62-year-old actor is said to be planning an extraordinary action that will take place when Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo passes the Olympic flag to L.A. Mayor Karen Bass during the Aug. 11 celebration. TMZ was the first to report this. Interestingly, he has proposed this idea directly to the International Olympic Committee.
It’s rumored that the initial move in the plan involves Tom Cruise descending from the roof of the Stade de France, carrying the Olympic flag as he makes his way to the field below. (It’s been suggested that a stunt double might be used for this part, but this hasn’t been officially confirmed.)
Afterwards, the broadcast will transition to a previously recorded scene where the Academy Award nominee is seen parachuting towards the Hollywood sign. Upon arrival, he hands off the flag to various athletes such as a cyclist, skateboarder, and volleyball player. They then proudly wave the flag across the host city for the 2028 Games.
According to reports from TMZ, the filming of the Hollywood sign sequence occurred in March. However, since Tom Cruise is known for his daring stunts that border on dangerous, his recent stunt didn’t cause much concern. Likewise, instances where the actor was spotted speeding around Paris this year were not surprising because “Mission: Impossible 8” has been filming in Europe.
Representatives for Cruise did not reply immediately Friday to The Times’ request for comment.
Under the leadership of artistic director Thomas Jolly for the Paris 2024 games, the closing ceremony, titled “Records,” promises an excitement level comparable to that seen in a thrilling movie by Cruise.
According to the official Olympic website, the Stade de France is set to become an enormous concert venue. Over 100 musicians, acrobats, dancers, and circus performers will guide spectators on a temporal adventure, traversing both the past and the future.
“The performance is highly visual, dance-like, and filled with acrobatics, also incorporating an operatic element to create a stunning mural. Jolly encourages us to celebrate this event in a meaningful way, remembering our past achievements while looking forward to the future.”
“Expect a major Hollywood production,” a source told Deadline.
In 2004, Cruise was one of those who escorted the Olympic torch from Los Angeles towards Athens. This year, at the beginning of the Paris Games, he enthusiastically supported Team USA, watching both the women’s gymnastics and swimming competitions.
“The star of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ said something amazing to Reuters,” he expressed, “They have fantastic tales, and the athletes are truly exceptional. It’s astounding the level of achievement they reach.”
