Todd Howard Says Bethesda Needed A Creative Reset Before Elder Scrolls 6

Skyrim came out in 2011. While fourteen years might not sound like a huge amount of time, it feels longer when you consider how many different versions of the game have been released since then!

Today also marks the tenth anniversary of Fallout 4, which first came out on November 10th, 2015. With both Fallout and The Elder Scrolls doing well – especially with the recent popularity of the Fallout TV show on Amazon – you’d expect Bethesda to have released some new games, wouldn’t you? Actually… that’s not quite the case.

You’re likely familiar with Bethesda’s recent releases. Following the events of ten years ago, they launched the online game Fallout 76 in 2018 and the single-player RPG Starfield in 2023. They also have other projects in the works, as they’ve publicly stated. Todd Howard famously revealed that their next game is the one fans are most eager to see: The Elder Scrolls 6, which was first announced at E3 in 2018.

It’s been seven years since we first heard about The Elder Scrolls 6, and all we know is that it’s still in development and won’t be released before 2026. With next year quickly approaching, Bethesda hasn’t shared any solid information about the game, and we might not get any updates for a while.

To celebrate ten years of Fallout 4, Todd Howard spoke with QG Magazine and confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still quite a ways from release.

I’m preaching patience. I don’t want fans to feel anxious.

The Elder Scrolls 6 Is Currently Playable

Howard has confirmed that work on The Elder Scrolls 6 is now a regular, daily focus. He also mentioned he likes taking time between Elder Scrolls releases, similar to the gap we saw between games during the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 era.

Bethesda first launched The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in 2006, then moved on to develop Fallout 3, which came out in 2008. They returned to the Elder Scrolls universe with Skyrim in 2011, and later released Fallout 4 in 2015.

It’s been ten years since the last Elder Scrolls game, and fans have definitely noticed the gap between releases. According to Howard, this was intentional – the team needed time to come up with fresh ideas for Starfield. He believes giving players a break from the Elder Scrolls series is also beneficial, though he acknowledges it’s been a longer break than ideal.

Howard shared some updates on The Elder Scrolls 6, mentioning the team recently completed a three-hour playtest. However, he emphasized that fans will need to be patient, as development is still ongoing.

That raises the question of why Bethesda announced the game so early. It seems to connect with what Todd Howard previously mentioned – people were constantly asking about The Elder Scrolls 6. For years, whenever Todd Howard did an interview, someone would bring it up. It’s also common for game studios to announce projects early to attract talented developers, essentially saying, “Join us and work on the next Elder Scrolls!”

The most encouraging news is that development on Elder Scrolls 6 seems to be progressing well, and giving the team a fresh start will likely benefit the game. While it’s disappointing we’ll have to wait longer, it’s a reminder that worthwhile things often take time.
