As a huge Elder Scrolls fan, I was really excited to hear Todd Howard hinting that The Elder Scrolls 6 might just drop out of nowhere! We’ve all been waiting for this game for over ten years, and honestly, the anticipation is insane. So, anything Bethesda says about when it’s coming out immediately gets everyone talking – it’s a big deal!
I remember when Bethesda first announced The Elder Scrolls 6 way back in 2018! We’ve all been dying for news ever since, but it’s been pretty quiet, and honestly, a little frustrating. Then, out of nowhere, they dropped the Oblivion Remaster in April 2025, and a lot of us started thinking, ‘Maybe they’ll do the same thing with the Skyrim sequel!’ Now, Todd Howard, who’s in charge of the whole series, has hinted that a surprise release might actually be happening, which is incredibly exciting!
Oblivion Remastered’s Shadow Drop Was a Test Run, Howard Says

Todd Howard, the famous director behind the Elder Scrolls series, hinted in a GQ interview that The Elder Scrolls 6 might be released unexpectedly, with no prior announcement. He suggested the game could simply “appear” one day, and mentioned the surprise release of Oblivion Remastered as a possible model, calling it a “test run” that went well. However, Howard also cautioned fans that development is still ongoing and they shouldn’t necessarily expect a sudden release.

It’s going to be a while and then, one day, the game will just appear.
Okay, so it sounds like The Elder Scrolls 6 is actually playable now, which is amazing! Todd Howard has said they’re doing playtests, but he also wants us to know it’s still quite a ways off from release. Apparently, he believes taking a longer time between Elder Scrolls games is good for Bethesda, letting them be more creative and avoiding just pumping out a sequel that doesn’t feel fresh. He’s asking us to be patient, but also assures us the team is working on it every single day. It’s good to know it’s progressing, even if we have to wait a bit longer!

Bethesda Game Studios recently marked the tenth anniversary of Fallout 4 with a special release. Todd Howard shared that the team has also been focused on Fallout 76 and its continued updates. But that’s not all – during an interview with GQ Magazine, Howard hinted at several other unannounced projects currently in development at the studio, though he didn’t reveal any specifics.
