Tito Jackson, of the Jackson 5, Dies at 70

As a lifelong fan of the Jackson 5 and a connoisseur of music history, the news of Tito Jackson’s passing has left me feeling a profound sense of loss. Growing up with their music was a joyous experience, and their influence on pop culture is undeniable.

It is with sadness that we report the passing of Tito Jackson, a member of the cherished pop band the Jackson 5, at the age of 70.

As the third among the nine progeny of the Jackson clan, I find myself sharing the spotlight with global sensations like my brother Michael and my sister Janet, who continue to captivate audiences with their timeless musical creations, making our household a veritable hub of melodious genius.

With deep sorrow, we share the news that our cherished father, iconic Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson, has passed away. We are stunned, distressed, and devastated by this loss. Our father was an extraordinary individual who showed concern for everyone’s well-being, his sons TJ, Taj, and Taryll stated in a heartfelt message on Instagram Sunday evening.

The Jackson Brothers’ group, comprising Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael, was recognized with induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. This family act churned out numerous No. 1 hits during the 1970s, such as “ABC,” “I Want You Back,” and “I’ll Be There.

Under the leadership of their father, a steelworker and musician named Joe Jackson, The Jackson 5 rose to fame as one of the most prominent acts in music. Originating from Gary, Indiana, where Joe supported his wife and nine children, the family’s musical careers flourished, eventually leading them to move to California as their success continued to grow.

On October 15, 1953, Tito Jackson, born as Toriano Adaryll Jackson, was the less vocal member of the band, primarily acting as a background singer and guitarist. Unlike his brothers who embarked on solo journeys, Michael among them, who achieved global fame as The King of Pop.

Michael Jackson died at age 50 on June 25, 2009.

In an interview with the Associated Press in December 2009, Jackson expressed that the passing of his younger brother had brought their family even closer.

He expressed that it undeniably drew us nearer. Recognizing the affection we share even when one of us is absent, he stated, brings home the enormity of such an absence. Furthermore, he made clear that he could never find comfort in accepting this situation.

Occasionally, it’s hard for me to accept it, but I think that disbelief will always linger,” he shared.

In 2014, Jackson expressed that they (his brothers) continued to feel the void left by Michael Jackson during their performances which included ongoing international tours.

He expressed that it’s hard for us to adjust to performing without him, as his absence is deeply felt. He added that his spirit remains among us during our performances, providing us with an abundance of motivation and joy.

Just prior to his passing, Jackson shared a post on his Facebook account from Munich, Germany on September 11th. This was during a visit where he and his brothers paid tribute at a Michael Jackson memorial.

Prior to taking the stage in Munich, my brothers Jackie, Marlon, and I, paid a heartfelt visit to the stunning memorial erected in honor of our treasured brother, Michael Jackson. We’re profoundly thankful for this unique tribute that not only cherishes his memory but also celebrates our shared heritage. A big thank you to everyone who keeps his spirit vibrant.

Among the nine Jackson siblings, it was Tito Jackson who launched his solo career most recently, with his debut album “Tito Time” coming out in 2016. He followed up with a single titled “One Way Street” in 2017, and mentioned to AP in 2019 that he was currently working on his second studio album.

As a devoted father, I, Michael Jackson, deliberately refrained from embarking on a solo career journey, preferring instead to devote my time and energy towards nurturing my three remarkable sons – TJ, Taj, and Taryll. Together, they formed the dynamic music group 3T. In alignment with our shared passion for music, we’ve collaborated on a captivating single entitled “Love One Another,” which features the legendary Stevie Wonder. For those eager to listen, a link to this heartwarming collaboration can be found on my website.

Besides Tito Jackson, his family members who remain include brothers Jermaine, Randy, Marlon, and Jackie; sisters Janet, Rebbie, and La Toya; and their mother, Katherine. Tragically, their father passed away in the year 2018.

Jackson’s death was first reported by Entertainment Tonight.
