David Mitchell on fears working with Anna Maxwell Martin for BBC show

As a seasoned gamer of both the small and silver screens, I must admit that the anticipation for “Ludwig” has piqued my interest to no end. Having followed David Mitchell’s career since his days on “Peep Show,” I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as he embarks on this new journey alongside the illustrious Anna Maxwell Martin.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to say, I can relate to David Mitchell’s apprehensions when it comes to teaming up with the talented Anna Maxwell Martin for our upcoming BBC series, Ludwig. It’s like stepping onto an epic quest where I don’t know every trick or spell, but I’m ready to roll the dice and see what we can create together.

In the upcoming dramedy, the actor famously known from “Peep Show” will portray the enigmatic puzzle creator John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor. This character is assigned to solve the mystery of his missing twin brother, with assistance from his sister-in-law Lucy, who will be played by Maxwell Martin.

Ludwig adopts his brother’s role as a Cambridge detective, taking on the investigation of a string of homicides and seeking out his twin sibling along the way.

Although Mitchell mentioned Maxwell Martin previously appeared on an episode of “Would I Lie To You?”, he considered “Ludwig” to be their first genuine project they worked on together, as it seemed more like real work compared to the show.

During an interview with Digital Spy and other media outlets while promoting the new series, Mitchell expressed his admiration by saying: “She’s outstanding, and in our scenes together, it felt like I was working alongside a truly talented actor. I just hope I didn’t come across as too awkward.

Mitchell further elaborated on his perspective, suggesting that comedy and drama are essentially the same, stating, “It’s all about the same skill set. The approach doesn’t change; you’re simply portraying a given situation in different ways.

However, he went on to say: “But obviously, on some level, when you’re in a scene with Anna Maxwell Martin, who’s done so much great stuff in a totally different genre from me, you’d be a complete egomaniac not to be a bit nervous.

It was pleasant for me to find those scenes effective, and fortunately, she seemed to think, “Wow, I’m collaborating with a genuine genius here,” although she graciously chose not to express any contrary thoughts.

Mitchell found working with Maxwell Martin to be a delightful and impactful experience. She effortlessly delivered humor and emotion, consistently hitting all the necessary marks for each scene. It was truly an honor, enjoyable, and straightforward to collaborate with her.

“And I sort of felt, okay, I’m alright. I’m allowed to be in a drama. This is all right.”

Ludwig is set to premiere on Wednesday, September 25 at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
