Throwback ’90s show TFI Friday gets Channel 4 return with Chris Evans – with first guests revealed

The popular ’90s show TFI Friday is coming back to Channel 4 this week, and Channel 4 has announced the celebrities who will be on the first episode with host Chris Evans.

The show quietly returned a few weeks ago as TFI Unplugged on Virgin Radio UK’s YouTube channel. Now, Channel 4 has agreed to air new episodes on Friday nights at 11pm. The first of six episodes will premiere on Channel 4 this Friday, April 17th.

The first episode will feature appearances by Sam Ryder, Shreya Ghoshal, Jack Savoretti, Sindhu Vee, Gemma Arterton, Peter Capaldi, and Cush Jumbo.

Cimran Shah, a commissioning editor at Channel 4, pointed out that TFI Friday pioneered the style of chat shows focused on personality, doing it long before today’s popular visual podcasts even existed.

I’m really excited to see TFI return to Channel 4! It’s been updated to feel modern, relevant, and ideal for today’s viewers, no matter how they’re watching.

Dennie Morris, News UK’s head of audio and news broadcasting, said that TFI Friday has remained a well-known and beloved show. He expressed excitement that the program – and Chris Evans’ talent – are returning to Channel 4 in a new format called TFI Unplugged on Virgin Radio UK.

We’re excited for viewers to experience the show’s magic again, no matter how or where they tune in.

The show first aired on Channel 4 from early 1996 to late 2000, and Chris Evans hosted the first five seasons. The last season featured a rotating cast of guest hosts, including stars like the Spice Girls, Davina McCall, Dermot O’Leary, and even Elton John!

In 2015, a special episode brought back Shaun Ryder, who had once been prohibited from appearing on Channel 4 due to excessive swearing during the show’s initial run. This special led to a complete new season being commissioned.

Starting this Friday, a new show called TFI Friday Unplugged will air on Channel 4 at 11pm each Friday night for the next six weeks. You can also watch episodes online through Channel 4’s streaming service and their YouTube channel. If you missed earlier episodes, you can find them on the Virgin Radio UK channel.

Classic episodes from the original series are available on the TFI Friday YouTube channel.
