Released in 2022, Thor: Love and Thunder is the fourth movie in Marvel Studios’ Thor series. Taika Waititi directed the film, which is a comedic take on the superhero genre. Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, and the movie also stars Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Russell Crowe as Zeus.

Thor: Love and Thunder got a mixed reaction from both audiences and critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a score of 63% from critics and 76% from viewers, which is relatively low for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. The movie earned approximately $760.9 million globally.

A common complaint about Thor: Love and Thunder is that it relies too heavily on humor. In an interview on the SmartLess podcast, as reported by The Playlist, Chris Hemsworth admitted some viewers were strongly upset by the movie’s comedic approach.

He explained that they had to be cautious with the tone of their films. Ragnarok was a surprising but well-received change, and a lot of fun to make. Love and Thunder, however, went a bit too far with its comedic style – it felt more like a silly Monty Python sketch. This led to some negative reactions, with audiences questioning why the character was so goofy and the film so unconventional. They realized they’d pushed the humor too far, even though their intention was simply to be playful and try something new.

Chris Hemsworth will return as Thor in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, hitting US cinemas on December 18, 2026. A follow-up film, Avengers: Secret Wars, is scheduled for release in December 2027.
